    Hey guys,

After doing some research, I found its pretty common for some 3rd gen models to leak water into the cabin from the 3rd break light. Mine being one of these.

Just curious to see if anyone in the area has also had this issue and how you went about getting it repaired? I'd prefer to take it to a Toyota dealer that has resolved this issue before.

    Thanks in advance!!

    *pic for attention lol

I took my 2017 in for the leaky 3rd brake light and they said it was a known problem and fixed under warranty.

I thought I was exempt as my 2017 didn't leak for the longest time. Of course once it did start leaking (65k miles) I was out of any form of warranty. Just bought the updated part and swapped it out myself.

So you just bought the 3rd brake light assembly replacement and that stopped the leak?

Correct. The issue was just with the shape & seal of the light against the cab from what I understand. The replacement was a bit of a pain but I have not experienced any leaks since. It's also worth noting that I only noticed the leak during a hell of a rain storm, no telling if it was leaking a smaller amount during car washes or lighter rain prior to that event.

    Update:

Took the truck into Cobb County Toyota this morning. Service adviser said he had seen it before and they usually have someone come in about once a month with this issue. Truck is a 2017 with about 26k miles so is still under basic warranty. Will update again when I get the truck back!

My 2016 just started leaking. Got in it after a night of rain and the roof was wet and the rear passenger seat was wet. Must have let a decent amount of water in. Trying to decide if I should just buy a new assembly and do it myself. 51k miles on the truck but I bought it new, idk if there’s any warranty on it or not.

OP has disappeared into the sprawl around Town Center and hasn't returned. Why didn't we send a search party?

How do you pull these lights out, I don't see any screws, is it just clips that hold it in place?

IIRC they're screwed in from the back side. You need to drop the headliner to get to the assembly to remove it.

After reading a few other threads I’m now very worried about mold. Going to check it out during lunch.

It is. I thought it required removal of the upper portions on all 6 pillars, the box in front of rear view mirror, and few other things. Not saying it's hard, just quite a few parts, just need time and patience.

I also think that's why MESO designed his brake light replacement to be able to be removed from outside (after the initial installation of hardware). Future ease.

Dealership quoted me $400 to replace. I know it’d be way cheaper to do myself but I’m scared to mess with all the airbags in the pillars. Just gonna let them do it......

Looks like i forgot to provide a final update..Sorry guys!! Cobb Toyota replaced the entire 3rd brake light assembly no charge and haven't had any issue since! Less of a headache than I thought. Good luck to all of you having the same issue!

Should be able to handle that with some carpet cleaner spray.
