I may be going to Amarillo in April for work. If I can, I plan on driving up rather than flying, and I would like to go to Palo Duro. I'd probably camp a day or two prior to business in town, and maybe again afterwards.
I've got an RTT, so I'm looking for info on the park and campsites that would appropriate for that. Also if there are any worthwhile off-road/softroad trips in the area.
    Thanks for any info-

you can go to the TPW website and find the Palo Duro Canyon SP info there. great place. very scenic. April is a crazy time there with the weather - you might have snow/ice, or 50 mph dust storm or 99F heat.

From what I've seen in the other Palo Duro thread I think I want the Mesquite site area. I'm also planning on hiking over to the Lighthouse Rock formation on one of the days from the trailhead higher up in the park.

lighthouse trail is easy and a must do for sure.
the visitor center has a store with a few items that one just might need too.
binoculars are needed if you try to locate the wild auodad (Ammotragus lervia) scattered on the cliffs in the area

I haven't thought about aoudad for literally 25 years. I used to go to Del Rio and that area a lot and hunted some there.

Canadian River OHV is a cool spot to check out off the pavement. It's one of the few public ohv lands in texas, about 20 minutes north of Amarillo. Palo Duro is very nice as well, just be careful the park rangers can be anal as it gets in my experiences

Dynatrac ProRock 60 Rear Axle, that is important enough.
As far as Palo Duro, April will be busy, if you know of exactly when you will be there, go ahead and reserve a campsite on the TPWD website so you won't risk anything.

The lighthouse trail is a must, but can get busy. So plan ahead for that. Weather can change drastically there as well, so be prepared for cold temps at night.

I would also say that the sunsets and sunrises are 100% worth seeing, so get to a good spot on a trail and just relax.
