I'm in Salem Oregon, always go riding with my buddy Charlie (silver lab).
I have a Kona Stab DH and more recently a brand new Transition Patrol (my Christmas gift from myself) IMG_8447.jpg IMG_8448.jpg

I mostly ride my hardtail Montague 26er, heh, since my riding buddy is 6. He loves to mtb, though. There's a nice trail down to Minto we can take from pretty close to our house.

I’m in NE Portland, so I mostly ride Cold Creek WA and Sandy Ridge. Hood River occasionally too. Definitely need to make it out to black rock ASAP! I’m on a Pivot Firebird 27.5

My brother is hugely into mountain biking, I was thinking of getting into it till I found how much he pays for his bikes.. he has 4 of them.... apparently for different surfaces or riding...

We get into it at times because he is one of the bikers I dislike on the roads.. laws are for motor vehicles only, not for bikes.

Ya they can be pretty pricey and pretty specific, a good AM bike you can ride pretty much anything (AM=All Mountain) This is my first bike purchase in about 6 years, I have 3 now, I can't buy a new one every other year. Gotta space it out :)

I've you've never ridden at Black Rock I highly recommend it, I've been riding there since 2001. That's where I got hooked on MTB

A good 1-bike quiver is either a HD3 or 4 or a Ripmo. If you can't win just about any offroad race with one of these it's not the bike's fault ;) I can appreciate the DW-link suspension in the Pivot but have to give Ibis props for being a solid company.

So if I was looking to get into some biking... that can be used practically, on any surface but might not be the "perfect" bike for all surfaces.. it would be on of those listed below?

I’m pretty up to date on bike tech. If you are going to get over 2 ft of air, get an Ibis HD4. If you prefer slightly better climbing efficiency and can handle a 29er in whatever air you are getting, get an Ibis Ripmo or an Ibis Ripmo AF. This is the apex of bike performance.

Check forums.mtbr.com/ibis for a good bike forum community.

All depends on how you feel. I'd test a bunch of enduro or trail bikes out until you find the one that fits right

Every major bike brand makes a great all around mountain bike, some better than others, some more expensive than others. For the novice rider or the beginner there is no need to drop $3K or more on a bike. My very first mountain bike was a "demo" bike from my local shop. It was a Felt Compulsion, great all around bike, I rode that thing everywhere until it was stolen. It was a demo bike so under a year old, I paid $1,500 for it (brand new was $3,000)

DMR Sect. I only ride a DJ bike now. Too many hobbies and no trails nearby so I sold the other ones. I can rip this thing around after work and hit the jump line every once in a while. Someday I'll get back into downhill riding but this scratches the itch for now.
