Yeah, it was a lot for us. Despite the fact that we had extra taken out in 2018, we still had to pay in, then I had to fight with the IRS, when they tried to penalize us for not having enough taken out. Trump's tax plan specifically stated that if a taxpayer had at least 85% of their tax bill withheld during the year, they would not be penalized, and forced to make estimated payments in 2019. This action was due to the plan being put in place during the year, with drastic changes in the tax tables... We paid about 93%, yet I had to fill out a bunch of forms, with some math chicanery that might throw @CedarPark for a loop. And wouldn't you think, of all people, the IRS could systematically determine who exactly was less than 85%? They have access to the variables... After I was granted our exemption by the grand poo-bahs, they came out with a ruling that suspended the whole requirement for taxpayers to prove they were over the 85% line. Thanks, :censored:heads.

We had a lot taken out in 2019 as well, beyond filing with 0 exemptions, but will probably still have to pay in. Trump's plan hosed some of us that have large property tax bills, only $10K of that can now be used to reduce taxable income. I can't get the wife out of Texas, but I'd like to...

Well, a lot of people benefited from the plan, but it burns my ass when I hear that only the rich came out ahead.

A lot of assess continue to get burned. I bury as much of my income as I can in IRAs and the Thrift Savings Plan (a government employee 401K-like thing) but I am still getting shredded over my taxes. Increased withholding last year so (hopefully) we don't get as ripped up this year.

Don't mention the words "capital gains" around the missus. It brings out her Tourrete's.

And it doesn't benefit you to own your home anymore, either.

    It's all bullshit.

Interesting. I ran into that a couple years ago, but at that time it was; 1) paying x% of what you paid last year, or 2) ensuring you pay x% of this year. So I have always ensured that we pay at least as much as the previous year. I haven't checked lately, hopefully not going to get surprised.

Yup, we're "tweeners". Make too much to get the lower income exemptions and deductions, and don't make enough to be able to benefit from the "rich-guy" loopholes.

I agree with both of you. I don't want to pull out the soap box but damn, how about a break for the average American working for a living, and that has some debt.

Meet at JJs BBQ in Lago Vista for breakfast tacos, leave there by 830am to be at park entrance by 9am. Meet over at camp area B to link up with over nighters, then head to the tower and split off in to groups.

Well, my wife's employer, as of 1/1/19, didn't allow 401K deductions for a year. That action removed one of the few things available for shielding income, so we both had additional income withheld in 2019, at a level I'm too pissed to mention.

My suggestion to all is to run the estimator the IRS has online:

    https://www.irs.gov/individuals/tax-withholding-estimator

    and adjust accordingly.
