Heads Up U-Joint

I just had a U-Joint replaced on my 08 Tacoma. Toyota actually replaced this for free, including labor. Stating that although there hasn't been a full recall on the part, they've seen the need to repair this part enough that they cover the cost. Toyota service did state that this was only valid through the end of March.

they sent a letter out in 2018 regarding propeller shafts

they reimbursed me for two of my joints. one from late 2017 and one from 2013.

if anybody paid, defiantly reach out to toyota and see if you can get it reimbursed.

 

Yaaa. I paid 450 bucks for the stealership to replace one of mine. But of course being a child I didnt keep the receipt. How would I go about getting reimbursed? I'm sure the dealership I went to has a record of it

 

Found it. Guess it was only 360ish

 

When I bought my truck they replaced the u joints, leafs, and prop shaft all at the same time.

But I got my floor Matts inspected too

 

I replaced all 4 of mine with greasable spicers for under 150 and a few cuss words.. dont feel so bad now

 

Ya, I had no clue how to do it myself. Probably need to do the carrier bearing and the remaining u joints myself now

 

There are some good videos and write-ups i found to make it fairly painless. It took me a few hours going slow enough to where i didnt have to do it twice. Happy to share info.

edit: i replaced my carrier too because i didnt want to remove the driveshaft again anytime soon.

 

go to the dealer and ask for a copy of the receipt. they had mine from 2013. i also had them stamp it as paid.

 

i had two done by the dealer. second one was while we were on vacation.

3rd one gave up the ghost in august. i went ahead and replaced that one my self. super simple. highly recommend a 18-24in breaker bar with a 1/2 in socket. you'd also want to rent a ball joint tool kit from your local parts shop. if you don't mind a little work, it's not a bad job to replace one.
