About 3 years ago my truck was in a major T-bone wreck. The jeep that hit me as I was traveling at 40mph completely destroyed my back passenger side tire but for some reason the wheel was in perfect condition. After all the body work was done the repair shop couldn't get it aligned. It as determined that the wreck bent my rear axle which wasn't obvious looking at it. Sure enough I got a shiny new black rear axle with new OEM leaf springs, U bolts, etc. Fast forward 3 years and I'm starting to get a little whine out of the rear end. Not bad. I have to be doing about 75+ mph to hear it. I've since changed the differential oil with OEM fluid including the locker additive. It's full and not leaking.

Question: when replacing the axle, do they transfer all the differential parts to the new axle housing or does it come as a complete unit? In other words, do I still have my original 153,000 mile gears or newer 3 year old gears?

I could be wrong, but I doubt if you can buy a complete rear axle assembly from Toyota. I would imagine you buy each individual piece. If that’s the case, there’s 2 different ways they could have fixed it.

    1. Buy a new housing, axle shaft, rear wheel bearing, seals and gaskets and assemble it with your other components.

    2. Buy a complete used rear axle assembly from the wrecking yard and bolt it in.
