    Hey guys,

My girlfriend has seasonal depression and I'm trying to look into light therapy for her. Has anyone used one of these lights before? I checked on Amazon and there's literally hundreds to choose from. Just looking for recommendations on a light that someone has actually used and has helped them with seasonal depression. Thanks guys!

I bought one of these a while back and gave it to my daughter. She works in the dark (limited lights) and that cant help at all. My suggestion is just get one moderate cost and see if she will use it. If she doesn't you wont be out big $$.

I hear this concept works for some folks. I may get another one since it's dark at 5:15 now.

Sorry I do t have a specific recommendation.

I think another aspect is that as it starts to get darker and colder earlier, it makes us retreat inside. Can def lead to negative attitudes and cabin fever after a while. Maybe go outside for a walk, etc to get some air.

Used to live in Seattle, and even when it was wet and gloomy outside, a walk in the woods was always a pick me up.

Full spectrum lamps help a bit along with vitamin D supplements.

I've found the most immediate and dramatic benefits come from a session in a tanning bed. Seriously, that's not just the Jersey Shore in me talking. One 10-20 minute session (depending on the paleness of the user and the strength of the bed) every week or two is a game changer during these short days.

Ya know, that's not a terrible suggestion now that I think about it.

Seriously though, it really does help...so much so that I actually bought an old commercial tanning bed on the cheap. Wired up an outlet in the basement, cleaned up the wiring and replaced the bulbs in the bed, and use it about twice a month starting this time of year.

We have one that was gifted to us but I’ve never used it. My wife isnt bothered by the long dark days and while I am to some extent I’m outside or in my truck most of the day so I still get to see the sun rise and set (all four hours of daylight right now!).

I know multiple people who use their happy lights for treatment of SAD and they are effective, provided you use them correctly. If I remember correctly that means using them for several minutes first thing in the morning, but I’m sure the lights come with directions and if not there’s always google.

I can't help but laugh at people in the lower 48 when they complain about short winter days and depression from lack of sunlight.

I haven't used one personally. I'm actually a bit apprehensive about it because I'm bipolar and a SAD light has a chance of making my mood go too high. That being said for someone without mood stabilization issues they can be a great help. I've heard awesome stories of people with SAD or just depression use them and they give a bit of a boost for sure. Mind you she'll need to use it 40-60 minutes a morning within the first hour of waking up off centered but still shining towards the eyes. Don't look directly into it but you do want it to be caught by the photo sensors in your eyes because that's how your body absorbs most of its vitamin D. I know some insurances will cover the lights and if I recall correctly you were able to claim it on your taxes in Canada at one point. Some pharmacies will also rent them if she doesn't want to buy one and would rather test it out.

With red light therapy, quality really, really matters! I have no first hand experience with it, but know others who have tried it with good results. I only know of one brand that is for sure reputable, called JOOVV
