    Brenda,

Spend the money on having the engine looked at by a different Toyota dealer in your area. Have them also get the oil analysis done. If everything looks good push for a Toyota warranty and call it good. If the other shop says bad thing have happened to the motor take that info and pursue requirement for repair.

hmm just out of curiosity, maybe log in to the toyota website/ create an account with your VIN and see what it shows for service records? Depending on what info they put in for this incident, i wonder if it could affect future trade in and if it would be a better option to pursue this issue through corporate HQ? This dealer has already proved incompetent and it might not be worth the risk or headache to keep them in your life. They're just going to keep trying to cover their asses. I would want to wash my hands of them ASAP.

I second this, it's not a specific age group some people just don't have any work ethic. You see it in older, you see it in younger. There's no reason to bash millenials or gen Z especially considering the oldest millenials are now 39 years old and Gen Z are putting up with the shit standards kept in place by older generations. Either way, one age group is going the way of the dinosaurs real soon and it'll be better when they stop complaining about those darn Zoomers trying to make things better for themselves and the planet.

I might be wrong but I think they first drained the engine, added ~6qts. 2 qts of that oil leaked due to the filter, etc, so they fixed that and topped with 2 more qts of oil.

    This, this right here.

It could be true or it may not be. I would want to have confidence in what I was being given and what they are offering doesn’t give me the warm fuzzy.

Yep, unless they are making this up, running the engine with 2qts of less oil won’t damage anything in few minutes.

I would like to think the engine would turn off based on the input from low oil pressure and low oil level sensors, before any damage could occur. Initially, I thought the engine continued running until all the oil drained, and was surprised a safety mechanism didn’t kick in to protect the engine.if it turned off on its own with 2qts low, it makes more sense.

I am thinking more was missing, not sure the truck would shut down with only 2 quarts missing.

OP, the smell you are getting could be the oil that sprayed under the engine bay (particularly exhaust manifolds and pipes) burning once the engine heats.

I am not sure about engine oil, but transmission fluid can cause a fire with something like this. If there is a lot of oil under the engine, clean it to ensure it is not an fire hazard.

    Brenda,

I have been around a few shops. I do not know any that drain the fluid into a catch pan and that is the only way they would actually know there was 3.5 quarts in the engine. They usually/ always have a funnel attached to a waste drum which there is no way to tell how much came out.

There is a chance they measured what was still in it but with the discrepancies you stated about the oil volumes they could be BSing you.

You had stated there was smell, then a check engine light / low oil indicator then the engine made funny noises then truck quit.

I do not believe there was 3.5 quarts of oil in your engine. With 3.5 there really should not of been any noise before it shut down.

I had a Bronco II that the shop only put 3qts of oil in. (Before I did my own oil changes) I drove it for 300 miles with just 3 quarts in it till I checked it at my next fill up.

After topping it up I drove that truck another 60000 miles

    It never made any noises.

I do not trust the 3.5 qt statement.

If it made noise on shutdown I suspect it is damaged some how.

If it were me, I would trade in this truck and get a new one. It would make me crazy wondering if the motors going to keep going or not.

I’d want a 10 year/100k mile warranty from Toyota itself , not the dealership. I bought that for my 19 when I bought the truck just because it made me feel better is all. Sounds like the engine protected itself like it’s designed to do and I wouldn’t freak about it. If it truly bothered me to death , I’d trade it in for a new truck if the numbers were to my liking and call it a day. Good luck on whatever you decide to do.

IF this is true, and the engine still had 2.5 quarts left in it, I doubt it had any damage.
Here's what I don't like: IF the engine still had 2.5 quarts left in it, it still should have had plenty of oil pressure. Also as @shakerhood mentioned, they may very well be incorrect on capacity, which in this very case, is not helping their claim.

So is this dealer willing to take a brand new V6 Tacoma off the lot, and show you, in person, that they can drain down to 2.5 quarts of oil, and the truck will go in to limp mode?
I'd also request they continue to drain (while running) the oil, and with an oil pressure gauge so you can verify at what oil level, or lack thereof, does it take for the truck to actually go in to limp mode. I mean if your truck/engine is fine,,,,, then buy their logic, so will theirs, right?
Again, if it lost oil pressure, it had little to no oil left in it.

I know this is not popular opinion around here, but you should know and be prepared for the dealer to put some responsibility on you as well, if you've already admitted to driving it, knowing the low oil warning was on. Again, not what you want to hear, I get that. They screwed this up, but to ignore the warning gives them an out too.

Cars and trucks that come in on the hook, (at a good shop) are never started. Push in/push out. First thing is pull the dipstick, dipstick. if oil is not present, add oil, coolant, pull the codes. The lawyers have made this very easy. I've stood in a court room with my hand in the air. It's not fun, and it was my day off.

Probably just lost in translation from the mechanic to the guy the OP is talking too. Probably didn't get all the details right.

Unless is sloshed and uncovered the pickup tube.

I do think the OP should at minimum get a Toyota extended warranty.

When I had an S2000 and took it in for an issue that was clear as day, they did this 1,000 mile thing to me. Frustrating but documented properly and I ended up getting the work done under warranty. It was about 900 miles until my warranty was up at 60k for drivetrain so that was nerve racking.

Issue was clearly that the Tranny fluid was leaking out the front of the case at the input seal. The dumbasses thought it might be engine oil. They did a die on the engine oil, taped the oil cap and dip stick shut. Obviously not engine oil. Then put die into the transmission so when they took it out, they can see all leaks. I dont think they made me do another 1,000 miles. I gave them a little bit of attitude about the mileage bc I didnt live that far from work and putting 1,000 miles on would take a long while.

Then.. .. then they scratched and dented one of my fenders while they did the work.. . I made them fix it. What a pain.

Make sure the vehicle is clean when you take it to them to fix so that anything they do is obvious and also so their lack of care doesn't bed dirt into the paint that you've left on there.

edit: grammer and words and stuff

The only odd things I read in this why filled short 2 quarts? Not sure how you confirm limp mode as they do not provide the code in their email. Regardless, I do feel they offered a fair assessment and recourse of the incident and life's to short to just not move on. If it made you feel better, just don't take it to them anymore, but they do provide recourse follow-up and a warranty in the email that I would take them up on. The only other thing lacking is to offer you may be your next couple oil changes on them to make you whole for your time of it breaking. It's not my truck so easy for me to say, but if I was in your shoes, this is how I felt after reading it. Also be careful responding in emails, I would personally go talk to them in person to avoid them using anything in an email against me and them taking offense on any attacks to Legacy. Then based on what the director agree on with you at the dealership, have him document to you in an email or put it in your service history. (performance check I think this means cylinder compression and sensor checks)??, complimentary oil changes??)
