I have 2010 Tacoma with the non-JBL head-unit stereo. My unit has crapped out the channel for speakers in the roof. I want to replace the head unit with an OEM. I found a JBL unit for sale locally. Can I put a JBL head unit in to a non-JBL system?

I question since I think the JBL systems have a separate amp between the head and the speakers, which I think would mean the speaker outputs from the head are low level going in to the amp.

You can add a JBL head unit but you'd need to add the amp as well. There's a post or two here where someone did the whole JBL conversion. Sometimes you can find the whole setup cheap but IMO it wouldn't be worth the hassle. At that point I'd rather just get aftermarket stuff. You could also get a non-JBL head unit to swap in - specifically, a '12-13 head unit which would be an upgrade. There are a handful of threads discussing putting the 12+ head units into older models. This is an easier swap if you don't have the JBL setup.
