After several attempts with different carpet cleaning chemicals that only offered temporary solutions, what finally worked for me was swapping my carpet for the all weather flooring.

I'd like to know that secret. I've chained smoked in mine for 17 years and finally quit. Can't stand the smell in there now.

Just make sure you know the difference between masking an odor and destroying odor causing compounds. This is why ozonators work so well. O3 is a very strong oxidizer that wrecks house on all kinds of organic compounds, same way bleach does.

I got smoke smell out by removing the entire interior, scrubbing both sides of everything, shampooing every cloth part, reassembling, and ozonating (any rental shop has one) with the AC/heat running in every vent combination.

This got 90-95% of the smell out. Following that, I did a routine as follows: For an entire Sacramento summer (very hot and dry) I parked the truck in direct sunlight with all the windows up to heat up the interior as much as possible, the idea being to volatilize as much of the odors as possible. Then around 2-3PM right at peak heat I went out and opened every single window so said volatilized compounds could vent out. I did this every day for an entire summer and by the end the smell was 100% gone and has never returned.

    Thanks for that.
The taco sits mostly as I have another vehicle to dd.
Might pull it in the garage and start stripping the interior out for a winter project.

The ozonator thing....is it a machine that runs inside the vehicle and safe to leave unattended while I'm at work?

Looks kinda like a space heater. You run an extension cord to the truck and plug it in and close the doors with the windows up and let it run inside. I recall doing it for around 1-2 hours, during that time I had the HVAC running and I'd go swap it to another combination in the end trying every possible combination of hot, cold, AC, floor, face, defrost, etc. Yank the cabin filter before, and buy a new one after. You'll have to do some research on how long to do it. If I recall the O3 can start breaking down things like cloth and seat foam if you just leave it in there overnight or while at work so I wouldn't do that but check it out for yourself.

That's the thing. I think I paid my local rental shop in the ballpark of $20 for a day.

I could also use it in the house.
Maybe worth my while just to purchase one.

    Appreciate it.

you are gonna think i am insane..but burning toast.

i once had a bad smell in a car. wife's car, and the bad smell was vomit. i ran an extension cord in and set the toaster on blast..and damn near almost caught the bread on fire. the logic is that the soot is nothing but carbon..and carbon absorbs smell..and that soot working together is a HUGE surface area of carbon.

it worked when my dog got skunked and ran thru my house, it worked when i burned fish cooking it, and it worked in my wife's vomit car.

for day to day stuff, i keep a vat of that gel..Fresh Air in my truck. it is awesome stuff.

I can believe this. There's something called bio-char that is basically half-burned organic material that can be used to pull contaminants out of water. Although it's also possible you're just covering the smell with burned toast smell instead.

hahha..it does smell smoky..but you throw open the windows. like all of them, and when the smoke clears, the odors are greatly diminished. i cannot believe how well it worked on skunk. i tossed the rug, washed the dog, and smoked the house. you barely smelled the skunk afterwards...barely. like a tiny pencil eraser smell. barely. tolerable and then it was gone. i think two more slices of toast would have done it.
