Disclaimer: This is my first vehicle with a transponder chip in the key, and while I knew they existed I had forgotten when I started this.

My brother used to always remove the black coverings from keys and drill press holes in them to make them less bulky on key chains. I attempted the same and peeled all the black covering off the key to my 2017 Tacoma SR Utility Package, only to find the attached picture. Still starts the truck no problem, so chip is intact. Attached another picture with a light showing how the key and chip seem to be arranged in the plastic housing.

Really just coming here to see if anyone has any bright ideas for:
-providing it some extra protection (ideally waterproof)
-getting a hole in it to get it back on my key chain
-keeping the form factor small if possible.

Brother suggested dip in resin then drill press potentially.

Be gentle with me if this post breaks rules or is poorly done, just joined this community after stalking it for two years. Thanks!

Hot Glue that transponder to the key cylinder. Then use any key you want forever.

Just realized this was the 3rd gen thread. I only do this chip bypass on the second Gen Tacoma. ( We have old school keys / no push to start switch. ) And only own one key to turn over the engine. But plenty of spares to open the door. But now every key will turn over the engine with the transponder glued in place.
