I just got into climbing a few months ago and have been bouldering at the gym a couple times a week. Since I'm moving to CO soon I would love to take advantage of the scene and get involved with some outdoor bouldering. I haven't done any lead climbing or top roping yet but it's on the list as well. The idea of hitting up some trails to get to climbing spots sounds like a lot of fun.

    So, any climbers here?

Yes indeed. Coming back to climbing after a few years away. I was a very serious "trad" for many years. Enjoy all disciplines though - bouldering, ice, alpine. Spent a lot of time in NV and CA. Ping back if you have any questions I might be able to help with. It's a new world now - different from the 90's. Mountain Project sprang up in the night with plenty of bickering and believe it or not, there's some kind of weird antipathy towards Tacoma driving climbers LOL. I need someone to explain that to ME. LOL

I’m not much into bouldering outside of the gym, the falls hurt and parts of my body don’t heal as fast as they used to. But if you start getting into sport or trad let me know, I’m always down for a new partner. What gym are you going to?

With you as to jumping off the boulders. The pre-crash-pad era didn't help.

Ah - didn't notice the date - F&%cking old geezer with a keyboard...as bad as a lieutenant with a compass. Wait, nothing is that bad. Anyway best wishes. I certainly didn't go from the couch to V9 in 5 five years; in fact the hardest problem I ever did was V4. (I was prouder of x-rated 5.10 but no sense telling tales.) Take care

Let’s get together to climb sometime. Not much of a boulder guy outside of the gym but I’m still down for it. Or we can hop on some sport or trad routes down by the springs/shelf or between us near devils head. My climbing partner just had a kid, so I’m partner less for the next 18 years.

Hey guys, I climb a ton - one of the main reasons we bought the truck initially. I'm usually in the gym a couple days a week and outside on the weekends. I also have a small home wall in my garage. I'd be psyched to get out bouldering any time, gym or outside! Let me know if you're psyched!

Nice... big rock climber myself. Mostly lead but I entertain bouldering every now and again.

I'm down for some climbing. What gym you climb at? We can start with a gym session and go from there.

I’m always down to lead. Let me know if you are ever needing a partner. Mine just had a kid so I’m climbing solo for a while.

I’m usually at earthtreks in Englewood. But since the movement merger I can go there too. We can try movement baker one day. Or just go outside. I have gear for trad and sport outside but no crash pad.

Sounds good! I could meet up at Baker or Englewood. Also have plenty of crash pads and would be down to go outside.

Anyone Reccomend some top rope gear?
    rope length/width
    Belay
    Harness

what else would I need? I’ve only got a bouldering gym locally...and a pretty good outdoor site with like 170 routes. And some good easy 5.3’s to get my started.

I personally recommend 9.7 70m rope, gri-gri, whatever harness is comfortable for you, the locking biners, a set of draws. Please make sure you use your gear when you set up a top rope so you don't put wear on the anchors. I would also replace the two rope side biners of the draws with locking biners and use them at the anchors. Make sure they are locked and are opposing one another. This is what I would do not exact direction.

I second this. I would go with a thicker bombproof rope for your first rope. Something between 9.5-9.9. Make sure you get a dynamic rope and not static. Depending on where you are climbing, a 60 would likely work. But you will eventually want a 70 because a decent amount of climbs require it.

A grigri and set of draws with lockers is great, hell I have two draws with lockers on both the rope and anchor end that I use if we are top roping all day.

harness is really whatever is comfy for you. Since stores aren’t currently open, I guess trying them on is a bit difficult. I’ve been using a black diamond solution lately and I find it very comfy. But everyone is different and I can’t guarantee you will be comfy in it.

One last thing would be some nylon slings and a few extra lockers in case you need to extend an anchor. A few double length (60cm) and a quad (120cm) should cover you. This will also come in handy if you run into an anchor with bolts that aren’t level. In this case you will need to build yourself an equalized anchor instead of just throwing your locking draws on.
