I've been shopping around for an "OFF-ROAD" GPS Navigation Unit.
    Most are quite pricey.

Have you tried the maps.me app? It is pretty cool. You download complete sections for offline use on your phone.

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

Get yourself a decent tablet and buy the Gaia GPS app... that's all you really need.

The navigation units are trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist now that there are decent tablets that have GPS and can run apps like Gaia.

I use earthmate but you need an inReach. I like that I can download satellite, USGS, topos, terrain and NOAA maps.

    Another fan of GAIA.
I use the free version as it gives me the ability to record my trip and also to set waypoints.

You can download just about any layer you can get on inReach (or any other dedicated GPS) on to Gaia... if Gaia doesn't already have it.

Also, with Gaia you can plan your trip on the desktop (for example) save it to your account, and it will automatically be available on what ever device you have on the account... IE tablet, phone, etc.

Makes dedicated GPS units literally useless.

And at something like 30 bucks a year? It's a no brainer.

Ok... now I'm going to sound like a fricken Gaia commercial.

But if you are planning a group trip, you can also have multiple people planning the route and colaberate... you can also share your routes... so everyone in the group could, theoretically, be running on the exact same map. (as long as they have the Gaia app and something to run it on) that is something that can't be done on dedicated GPS.

    Same.

Joe- do you have any resources as to how to do the above functions? I use it more as a GPS but would like to add downloads. Thanks.
