Yep, sure was. I’ve ran into some really jumpy people off the Cabazon Road (Bernalillo) past the Zia Pueblo by White Mesa.

    Nice snag the petrified wood!

    I carry and collect S&W's.

I keep a Charter Arms 44 Bulldog loaded with 200 gr Gold Dots in the pocket behind my passenger seat. If it fell into a canal or creek, it wouldn't bother me at all. There's no paper work connecting it to me.

IDK how good of an idea this, especially since a bear surprising you wouldnt even give you the chance to aim all too well, but it makes sense in theory. One of my friends who is a retired cop says that one of his friends, a guide in Alaska, carries a revolver (dont remember the caliber) with 2 shotgun type type rounds ready to go, and regular rounds to follow up. He says this is to blind and destroy the bears nose so that it cant see or smell you, then you go for a kill shot.

in the lower 48 for 2 legged or 4 legged critters something that starts with a 4 will do.

    It would have to be
one of the .410/45 long colt revolvers,
like a Taurus Judge or S&W Governor, unless they had snake shot loaded in a 357 or 44mag. Either way, that sounds like a terrible idea. There is no ethical reason for simply wounding a bear, who's going to be an injured angry bear to the next person coming down the trail. If you need to defend yourself from a bear attack, shoot to kill because a bear who's interested in you enough to attack you isn't going to be dissuaded because it's injured.

If you aren't shooting to kill then you shouldn't be shooting it all.

This sounds like the same type of person who fires a warning shot or shoots to wound in a self defense scenario. I don't need to state how bad of an idea that is, there are plenty of court cases. I can only image it plays out the same way for wildlife encounters. The Fish and Wildlife Service takes that stuff super seriously

In Alaska they really don’t care at all if you shoot and wound an animal in defense against a legitimate threat. The bad idea is using a half-assed defensive load when your life depends on stopping the attack immediately.

They don't care if it's intentional wounding? Would it not be the same demonstration that you must not have truly feared for your life if you were willing to injure it versus kill it? Rule #2 of gun safety says not to point a gun at anything that you are not willing to kill or destroy. "Injure" kinda sounds like a direct violation. If you want to risk it, by all means, but that's just not something I'm willing to do

Yeah, they really don’t care. If the animal is a legitimate threat to you or your property you can use just about whatever level of force you want to get rid of it. Killing it is better since the meat is taken and used but an injured animal that runs off and doesn’t injure/kill a human or property is completely acceptable in most cases.

I'm fine with using lethal force with the intent to stop the threat, but knowing that killing it is most likely the outcome. Where I have the problem, and where I would see the justice system having a problem, is intentionally injuring it instead. If you shoot to kill, like you're supposed to and it runs off injured that is fine, but that is not what is being described.

It’s the truth. When/if the Trooper shows up and you explain what happened and how you picked up your closest .22 and shot the bear or moose 15 times in the ass and it ran off it’s a simple report and life goes on.

All depends on where you are. I carry a 9mm for two legged problems and bear spray for everything else, lol. I’m usually not in brown bear country so I carry the lightest gun I have just to keep weight down.

Currently, a CZ P07. When I go in the deep woods it gets 147 Flat Nose +p ammo to reach vitals on anything I might need to put down. In the future, I'm planning on a G40 for the same reasons.
