Picked up this 79 Hilux this morning for a restoration project. It’s a hunk of junk right now but sitting next to my 2019 Tacoma I think it deserves to be put back to its former glory - how about you? Will be posting my progress here. Any words of wisdom?

This will be epic, what are your plans? Restore to OEM or something special?
Can’t wait to follow this project.

I’m not doing a frame off resto or have plans to restore to OEM but I want to take it from a ranch truck to something fun to drive around with my daughter and my dog.

Nice, I've got my eye on a 1980 that I'm going to see tonight. Hopefully will be driving it home this weekend!

You doing the paint or having it done? Getting ready to refinish some panels on my 86 and have never worked with single stage paint before myself.

I had it done, don't have the time. I pressed a few painters to spray single stage but everyone recommend base/clear. Like everyone, even the older guys I asked who weren't going to be the ones to spray it.
In highschool, we sprayed my buddy's 84 Nissan in single stage red, it never really shined. Apparently all the stars have to align or you need to own a factory to make single stage shine, 1st coat of clear below, used factory off white paint code.. I don't think it'll bee too much shine..

It won't petina like the original color though

My problem is im planning on doing just a couple panels as most of the truck is in great condition and would love to keep it as original as possible, I dont want to have some panels with clear and some without.

You truck looks amazing! Same color as mine I believe. "Creme 557"

Here's a pic of mine. Love the color, I'm getting a duplicate set of factory steelies powdercoated the same color as body.

Ahh, yeah, dam, definitely sounds like a job for a pro, blending single stage.
Thx, it's actually white 033, love that creme though, my FJ is almost that color.

Yes, TexasJuice, not trying to jack at all, let me know & I'll remove too, still jealous of the 79!

Well, my 81 Hilux is shown in my avatar. Great looking 79 that you found to restore. Most of the 79-82 Hilux's that I have seen, have bedsides that are rusted beyond simple repair. Keep us updated with your progress.

    Be careful.

You might end up enjoying the simplicity of the old one more. Other than on longish road trips.

And if you park it close to new ones in the mall parking lot, I'll guarantee it will attract more lookers.

Exactly the case for me. Has been on DD duty since I bought it which I was not anticipating.
