Was it doing it before you did the wires and spark plugs? Is it a loud back fire? or just popping on reving?

I'm thinking you have plug wires crossed or the timing is off.

    Please give us details.

Do you have a check engine light and is it flashing?

How hard is it to get the truck to start?

The more details you can provide, the better we can help you.

In addition, many of us know pro techs that we can forward your questions too.

    We are listening.

Recheck your wires, check the order of the distributor etc.

You could have burnt valves. This can be hard to test, but a compression test catches them most of the time. Or a cheap Amazon borescope.

Gaped at 0.32 just changed to 0.40 no help however if I get it rolling it runs fine about 55mph however if put cruise control on can feel it like jumping an only occasional backfire however starting off content backfire or poping sound

You must have a CEL on? It really sounds like your timing is off.

What would cause timing to get off an also what’s the chances that it could be fixed with very little mechanical experience

Yes, it does sound like you should take it to a shop. Be honest. Tell them you want to learn why your truck is acting this way. Tell them that you will be passing along what was found wrong to your friends for future reference (us here). Also tell them that you will be returning for future issues if the problem is resolved reasonably.

You have not told us if you have a check engine light. There is not much we can do untile we know what "code" is associated with that light.

Someone took the dash apart and took out the light bulb.

If you got gas coming out the black box under the hood, you definitely have a CEL.

Take the truck to AutoZone and have them scan your truck. It doesn't matter if the bulb is removed, it will still record the codes.

I'm guessing you are not in a state that's has annual emmision testing..

CEL is the light on the dash that looks like an outline of an engine.

You should have no lights in the instrument cluster 5 seconds after you start the truck. The only lights you should see are turn signals and bright light indicators.

Anything else should be researched. Let us know. There is huge knowledge base here and we all want to help.

    You are welcome.

Four runners are very similar to tacomas. Many things are the same.

    Ask any questions you want.

    Thanx
