2005-2019 Tacoma bucket seat compared to 2020 Tacoma power bucket seat

I have designed a budget friendly bolt in 2005-2019 Tacoma bucket seat front of seat adjustable height riser and a separate budget friendly bolt in 2005-2019 Tacoma bucket seat adjustable height rear of seat riser. Both are in R&D right now. In my head I have a design for a manual front and rear seat adjustable height riser assembly that would only require drilling a few holes in the seat frame and turning wrenches to install it but that is waiting for capital for me to invest in it. So when I heard that the 2020 Tacoma was available with a power front bucket seat (FINALLY!) I was pretty excited to check it out.
    2020PwrSeat.jpg

The 2020 Tacoma power seat moves the seat’s bottom cushion and the seat’s bottom half of the frame independently. The bottom cushion rises up from the frame as the frame rises up off of the floor. The 2020 power seat does go lower than a non-adjustable 2005-2019 seat and of course it also goes higher than the old seats. The front and rear height are adjustable independently with the same control switch. The power seat is a direct bolt in for any 2005-2019 Tacoma that came with a bucket seat.

As far wiring it’s difficult to tell in a Toyota dealer’s lot. I haven’t been in the automotive industry for years so all of my contacts at my local Toyota dealers are gone. I did notice there aren’t any large gauge wires going to the seat. Personally I was hoping to see one large gauge +12v wire and one large gauge brown wire but that didn’t happen. The best way to determine wiring is by looking at wiring schematics anyway. I took a blind video and it didn’t come out very well as 99% of the video was useless and the other 1% was 99% blurry.

I did a quick shopping search on the 2020 Tacoma factory power seat and I saw numbers over $1,000 for the frame assembly, a person would still need the wiring, and a upholstery shop to finish the job. I’ll eventually get into the manual seat retrofit into power seat market as well.

I made a blind video of the underside of a 2020 Tacoma power seat and here are some (blurry) screenshots from that video.

Looks & sounds very promising! Price is a bit off-putting though at a grand + cost of upholstery. Watching for more details....

I still dont know why toyota puts covers on the rear bolts, but not the front bolts.

Because a rear passenger can kick the front seat's back bolts a lot easier than a person sitting in the front can kick the front seat's front of seat bracket's bolts.

What does kicking a bolt have to do with it? putting a cover over it doesnt make it less kickable, it sticks out more now with a cover.

Thankfully Toyota did not use a power seat ECU like some of their other vehicles. The power seat diagram looks to be fairly simple.

The cover prevents a person from being cut or seriously injured by steel. People ride without shoes, or with thongs, or sandles, and the steel bracket and its bolt are a safety hazard.

Think about the differences between a adult driver and a rambunctious 8 year old boy sitting in the back seat, which one is more likely to get their foot cut on exposed steel?

You don’t wear flip-flops and sit in the back much, do you? On an older car, I made the mistake of not putting the covers back on and my daughter paid for it. I still feel guilty about that one, especially seeing her scar and the blood stains on carpet... It’s just one of those things that nobody would’ve really thought about unless they were sitting back there.

My stupid high school friend had some girls in his 69 Camaro and he rolled the f______ thing. One of those girls lost her big toe from the back of the front seat, who knows which part of the seat sliced it off.

My friends’ feet got stuck under the front seat when I bottomed out in my old BMW, I had to stomp on the floor to bend it back down for him to get free!

Thank you. That's crazy, 4 different motors.

edit: it does show only 2 wires going from the power portion of the seat to the truck and as far as the wiring goes it couldn't get any easier to duplicate in a retrofit scenario.
