I've got an issue that seems unique and I don't really know what to do about it. When I come to a stop, just before I stop, I feel a thud on the rear end. Almost like my truck is being rear-ended. I took it to a shop and they said that my rear drums had dust in them and one side had more than the other. They cleaned it out, thinking that was the issue, but it did it again almost immediately after leaving the shop. Can anyone help with this? I don't want to keep blowing money on shops and I am a little worried that this will produce a larger issue.

My '17 does the same thing, it only happens when you come to a stop lightly. It's like a little jerk forward right before coming to a stop.

Had a 07 Taco that did this starting about 36K miles, dealer said it was normal, and it didn't always do it. I turned out to a programming issue with the auto trans. My dealer would not address this until I called Toyota Customer Service.
    Good luck

My 17 does the same thing, but only when the trans is cold and normally only happens on the first stop I come to in my morning commute. It's a delayed downshift clunk and it is programming related vs. components but I've just accepted it as is, and hopefully it doesn't prematurely wear out the gears!? :)

This is one you can fix yourself. I don't know what vehicle you had before, but trucks with leaf springs have a condition called axle wrap. Usually, if y
Ding ding we have a winner. Axle wrap. Grease the slip joint. Easy peasy.

Sounds like the driveshaft slip joint is binding. Greasing it fixes the issue temporarily. I've heard it's possible to drill and tap it for a zerk fitting and add a breather hole.

My quality control manager at Charlesglen Toyota, Calgary said it’s a driveshaft issue. Grease the slip joint or replace the drive shaft. I got mine replaced

2 issues that I see often.

1st, TRD shocks like to fail internally, and the valves mess up so badly the truck feels awful on stops. Easy way to tell is to bounce the rear of the truck and see if it jounces properly side to side.

2nd, slip yoke on the rear prop shaft. It's just binding and giving in on stops. 4runners are famous for this. Start by greasing the tail shaft (its a 2016 so it should have fittings)

Thanks for all the replies. I ended up trading the truck in for a 2018 instead. The 2016 was beginning to annoy me with little issues popping up. My new 2018 is so much better!
