Just replaced my outer driver side door handle and now my lock, same side same door, is jammed upwards (unlocked) and won’t lock manually but will lock with the remote.

Also my door opens from the inside handle no problem but not the outside :frusty::facepalm:

any help would be greatly appreciated :help:

The part circled in red is bent btw, not sure if it’s supposed to be perfectly flat or not...

I think I found the issue. (And the issue with the lock not manually going down kind of just fixed itself as I tinkered with the linkage assembly a little).

I took the guide for the window off as it was covering the door latch and all of the linkages relating to it and the lock. And it’s kind of really hard to describe without actually having it in front of us to reference so I’ll do my best at simplifying it...

So you have the latch that holds your door closed. There are three linkage bars that connect to it.

Now keep in mind (bear with me this is the hard to explain part) that all of these bars must push a sort of pin down to a certain point in order to engage the latch to open the door.

In the picture with one of them circled in red, that is what connects your outside handle to the latch. What the issue is, according to my theory, is that over time that bar bends after being opened so many times (esp. if your handle brakes and youre really pulling at whats left to get the door open) and so it does not “have enough length” to push that pin mentioned earlier all the way down far enough in order to engage the latch.
This is the reason why it can open from the inside but not the outside. The inside handle has a different bar connected to the latch that is unaffected by the warping of the bar that connects to the outside handle.

I know it might be a bit hard to follow along with but that’s the best I could explain it.
I’m going to try bending that bar back a little to kind of stretch it out tomorrow to see if that fixes the issue. I’ll follow up.

Thanks for the explanation. Will see if this can fix my problem

been in there a many times and what you describe is the issue. I take the latch mechanism out and clean it pretty good then re-lube it. Another thing to look at is the guide clip that holds the rod from the latch to the interior door pull/handle. If it flops around the limited motion from the power lock is used up flopping the rod around and not transferring the motion to/from the latch assembly... you will have an intermittent power lock/unlock situation then.

I’m about to take on this project this weekend. I haven’t had to replace a door handle on the Tacoma before but have done one on a Camry. Any other suggestions besides clean and lube the locking mechanism while I have the door apart?

You know what I accidentally broke that very clip during this process and thats exactly whats happening to me now lmao fml. I wonder if Toyota sells just those clips alone without having to buy a whole new assembly...
