I purchased a non JBL 2020 DCOR and I'm curious how the sounds quality from the new head unit compares against the previous years?

Is the sound quality a lot better?

If so, should I update the speakers with the kickers ?

Most say the JBL is not worth it, and its not very user friendly when needing to be upgraded. Your best bet is to go to the dealer and listen to both JBL and non-JBL models.

If you are not going to touch it the JBL is a decent improvement over non JBL (ive had a few of both), but its by no means a fantastic stock system and as @5nahalf mentioned its a royal PITA to upgrade over non JBL. The non JBL does suck big time in stock form.

2016 JBL was better than 2020 JBL IMO

I have a 2020 TRD Sport MT w/ Non-JBL Premium (no sub) and it sounds reasonable good but doesn't amaze. I have not listened to the JBL system in auto transmission Tacoma yet.

Wiring harness/plugs in the 2020 models are different compared to the 16-19 entune stereo. Ask me how I know.

Lol, mine is the non JBL, I’m just curious if it’s worth the money to change out the speakers. They don’t sound too bad to me. I know my 2013 Tundra had a shit stereo system.

from what I’ve gathered, upgrading the door speakers & dash tweeters does improve the sound quality a lot for the non jbl systems. But yeah, the factory speakers are decent and get the job done. I just ordered a set of TacoT tweeters since they are on sale at the moment and cost half of the Subaru ones that everyone seems to be using, so I’ll see how much they improve the sound quality overall and go from there.
