I have my Smittybilt X2O wired exactly how OP and the instructions have it. Also have cb radio (fused), sPod, and something else (I forgot) wired directly to the battery. Winched several times, no issues. Its been at least 3 years.

I am not an expert, but the fuses/relays are protecting your lights. If smittybilt says wire it directly, then dont stray from that.

What terminals and battery are you running?

I love the SDHQ terminals. They are a bit spendy but make it way cleaner

 

I think these were like 150$. When he told me that I was like....for two terminals? They're literally a mile up the road from me too haha.

Thanks! You may be right... I have the X-20 winch. Instructions/Amp on page 16 here. (a 10k lb max pull requires 415A)

The one I was looking at had a working current of 300A, with an intermittent working current of 455A.

here might be okay as long as I don't max pull for more than 5 minutes: Rating 275A DC Continuous (1hr) , 455A DC Intermittent (5 min), 1250A DC Cranking (10 sec)

The winch instructions recommend to work for 30 seconds on and then 30 seconds off anyway... (10k lb max pull requires 415A)

Problem I have with the Blue Sea Heavy Duty switch is the 1/2" lugs, compared to 3/8" connector on the winch wire. I'll need to drill out or cut and re-crimp the winch wire to accommodate the 1/2" HD lug, and then I'll need to go from a 1/2" lug connector to the battery's 3/8" terminal.

Just not sure if the HD switch is absolutely necessary if I'm not running the winch for 5 minutes at a time. Well shit... All that work seems counter-productive considering my last winch went straight to the battery for 10+ years with no issues...

Yeah I think that's going to be perfect for me too. I pulled up the specs here and it looks like 300A continuous, 600A for 5 min, and 1200A for 30 sec. My winch can draw up to 500ish A and max pull so that should be perfect for it.

E series, whereas I went with the slightly smaller 300

$30 Blue Sea Systems 6006200 m-Series Battery Switch ON/OFF with Knob, Black

M series because I liked the protective cover on the back. I'm confident both will be fine as these winches are designed for intermittent use. Interesting article over that explains the differences in winches here, but it doesn't go in depth about Amps. The winch controller "switch" activates the relays, but sometimes those relays can get stuck. So, besides protecting the wire from shorting out, the switch also helps if there is ever a "runaway winch" scenario.
