ENGINE OIL CHANGE HELP!!!

Okay so I’m doing my oil change right now. Removed the the drain plug. I’ve let it sit for about 30 plus minutes so it can drain every drop that comes out. Removed the filter I used the bottle method to catch the engine oil. Works great by the way! Upon grabbing the new filter that I got from Toyota it’s way shorter than the one on my Tacoma. The sales man gave me a

$52 90915-YZZD1 Oil Filter 1 Case (QTY 10)

90915-YZZD1 instead of a

$53 90915-YZZD3 Oil Filter 1 Case (QTY 10)

90915-YZZD3 which was what I took off. My dumb fault for not paying attention. So annoyed! My question to the gurus will I be fine if I use the YZZD1?

 

If it were me, and stranded, since you already drained it and it's the middle of the night, I'd put the old filter on, fill up the oil and tomorrow go get the right filter and a qt of oil. Swap the filters, then check your oil level. Start it, run for a couple minutes, turn it off. Let it sit 15 minutes. Check oil, top it off if needed.

(This is if you don't have any other way to go buy another filter, otherwise, take the wife's car in the morning and get the right filter and fill 'er up)

I read the 4cyl. guys running the yzzd3, but never heard of a yzzd1 on the 4.0.

 

I may be wrong but the d1 and d3 can replace each other

Can you run to the dealership to get the correct one in the morning? (Without using the truck of course)

If so, do that.
Save the trouble and hassle.

IF NOT, put the old filter back on. Drive over to the dealership, and get the correct filter swapped out.

Then add some more oil as needed.

As a general reminder, oil filters actually filter better and better as they get older... until the point at which they impede oil flow and starve with the engine of oil.
BUT, that would likely be upwards of 20k+ miles.

 

They are the same filter, D3 is just bigger capacity. Run it and change it when you have time.

Won't harm anything until its resolved.

Back in the day we used to use D3's on the 3.0 and 3.4. They called for D1s.

They are 100% interchangeable. But the V8's and the 4.0 V6 call for D3 simply for capacity.

The old spin on A1 and A2 used to be the same.

 

When I did my first oil change, I ended up with a shortie version too. Not a big deal, it just slightly reduces the amount of oil you put in by maybe a half quart.

Someone did a very lengthy review of several oil filters. I read through the whole thing and came away with a plan to go with Napa oil filters.

 

If it’s the same filter type, just simply a bit smaller, I’d run it until I change oil again.

 

You didn't mention that you distroyed the old one, DONT PUT THAT ON YOUR TRUCK! If you have to drive it to get a new filter, use the new one as a temp.

A tip for the future... I walked out to the shop and took a pic just for you, lol. Buy filters by the case of 10. Cheaper and you have backups

J/J with you bro, Ive been there, plan to do some work on your truck after work and something go wrong so you can't get to work in the morning, it totally sucks!

 

To save $5? I have a shelf of D3's I've opened to check for particles. The tube and filter run the full length of the filter. With the 1GR-FE running a pretty low oil pressure already by design, not sure I'd feel safe running a filter with less surface area for any period of time. Especially over $5. To put $5 into perspective, Just think about how much money you spend a month just on wheel and tire cleaner. Now, Your engine ... Vs.... shiny tires.... Lol! That's just my personal opinion of course.

 

It’s simply a filter. It’s going to do it’s job. If it bothers you that much change it when you get a chance. If you change your oil regularly it shouldn’t be a problem until your next oil change. Do what makes you sleep better at night.

 

OP you could just get with the times and run that filter till your truck blows up at 200k miles and then sue the people that sold you the wrong filter.

How do I reset the maintenance required light?

 

This guy is right. Happened to me also when I ordered off of Amazon in a rush. Won't hurt anything.

 

Set your Trip Odometer to Trip B.
Turn the key to completely off.
Push in the Trip Odometer reset button and hold it
Turn key to first "on" position (not to start and definately don't start) and continue to hold the button.
The numbers on the odometer will change to 4 bars, ----, then 3, then 2, then one, then none and you are done!
Then go to bed, it's after 2am!
