Just curious how many people would buy a built Tacoma? Or do you know someone who would? Either semi built (lift kit, tires). Or even fully built (roof top tent, built in stove, canopy, prinsu rack, kings, etc.).

I've seen people asking upwards of $50,000 + for built Tacomas.

    - Do they actually sell?
    - Has anyone bought one built?
    - Has anyone sold one that was built?

Feel free to comment good, bad or indifferent. I know you typically don't get any money back from mods. Just curious if it's possible.

My boy just sold his blue 2nd Gen to a dude... it had a laundry list of things on his build... OrdinaryOverland is his IG, Tim.

Not many people want to go through the hassle of building out their Tacoma, hence why the TRD Pro is so popular. For someone that can afford it, they probably just want to have a truck that's ready to go without having to do any research.

I would never buy a built taco. Never know who performed the work and what is the quality of parts. Plus, lifting trucks is usually asking for trouble, unless its like 1.5"-2".

I would think it would be way harder to sell a modded taco, unless thats exactly what someone wants. Also the seller usually wants a shit ton of money to get some of it back for the mods, unfortunately it brings the value of truck down.

I never lifted any of my trucks or did a bunch of mods to any of my vehicles. I sold them all on craigslist with good results. I just had the usual, different wheels and maybe exhaust/intake.

Always better to build it yourself, at least you will know for sure its done right.

I prefer mine pretty much just stock, always have. Just a vehicle to get me around and haul tow what I need.

They definitely sell, but no I wouldn't buy one.

I would feel like I'm buying someone else's truck... they put their own creativity and thought into it. They put their work in it, not me.

But I get why people buy them.

I was considering it. Got a new 2019 but there was a 2018 TRDOR different color with a few thousand miles on it but with a rack and lift and other stuff. Ended up new since I was new to the scene, didn't really know where I wanted to go with the truck. Don't regret it either. Love driving a new vehicle knowing I'm the first owner. Price on the 18 was like $1k less than a new one, so that was a huge thing for me too

Unless you're doing custom builds for a living, my hunch is that you'll sell a stock truck faster/easier than a (significantly) modified one. Your dream truck with the 6" lift, pink rims and matching tonneau cover is someone else's nightmare. Even if a modified vehicle sells, you'd probably get more money by restoring it to stock and selling the parts separately.

edit: I'd consider buying one if it had the parts I wanted and the price was right (eg., scary low), under the right circumstances...

Per Rick Harrision… you can list it for anything but it will never sell.

I put a 5.5" lift and 32" tires among other things into a 1991 Explorer years ago and when I decided to change directions I removed the lift and tires and returned it to stock to sell it. I am sure it would have sold lifted but I felt it would sell faster to a wider audience and I sold it within a week.

Now as for me, I like the build part. So stock for me when I purchase.

I do know a guy that would rather throw money at someone else's build than build his own, to each there own, I guess.

I would only buy built (any vehicle, not just trucks) if I knew the builder, the parts list and it came with documentation. Better if I'd helped build it and driven it for its intended purpose.

Otherwise stock or easily undone mods only.

I'm guessing it's harder to sell his on the East coast.

There's a lot of things one could do with $50k and a built Tacoma is not one of them on my list at this price point. The older I get the more I just leave stuff alone.

I wouldn't buy one with a bunch of bolt on shit like tents and racks and whatever. I would try to negotiate those out of the deal or find a different truck. But if it had work done that I wasn't going to be able to do myself then maybe.

A built truck is a great way to get a deal on aftermarket suspension, bumpers, etc if they leave them on. You never really get your money back from mods.

I would depending on who it was built by. If it was a demo truck by one of the major vendors, I’d consider it. If it’s built by some random guy I’d be much more hesitant.

I’d want to look it over and see how things are done, especially electrical work.

This is kind of how I see it. I'd rather buy stock and build it myself. But that's in part because I do all my own labor/install. I'm thinking when I sell the truck one day. I'll list it high with mods installed. Sit on it for as long as necessary. Something tells me the right buyer would bite, eventually.
