How hard it would be to swap over a 3.4 from a 98 4runner to a 03 tacoma prerunner? My truck has a cracked head and there is a 98 4runner in my area. So I don't need any parts I'll just get them all from that.

It is a swap just like any other .

I am not all that familiar with the 2.7 as far as length compared to the 3.4

Maybe engine mounts need moved Transmission mount ??

Going with a auto or manual ??

Then the Merging of the wiring harness

It will have some challenges but not impossible

it will swap just fine, ECU from 3.4 has to be brought over, and you will have to change some under-hood wiring harnesses....go for it...

    used to have - 99 2.4L I4 5 lug & 04 prerunner v6
as mentioned, the ecm and under hood wiring harness needs to be swapped out as well as motor and tranny mounts and full exhaust plus you need the larger v6 fuel lines swapped out including the fuel filter and mount for mounting under the frame rail and the v6 air box swapped along with ducting and sensors.

a little involved but very doable with a little time and patience

You don't have to change the fuel lines. Just add a filter at the end of the line and add another line from the filter to the engine. But yes the motor mounts need to be moved. My tranny mount moved because of the 4x4 conversion. So you'll need to know how to fab and you'll need the measurements of the the motor sits in the engine compartment or else it will change your angles of the tranny and cause vibes.

But to use a 4Runner ecu I don't know how it would work. I stayed with taco parts. If you go with the earlier model you'll have a lot of wiring to do because you have an 03. Only the 03-04 wiring is the same. So it possible you'll need to change the three harness. Under hood with fuse box, dash, and engine harness with tranny harness.

Your smog stuff is going to be different to. It all depends on state the vehicle you get the parts from. In Colorado we could only go with the same year motor and newer for a engine swap. But I don't know for you so check on it before you buy parts. If you could get all the parts from the 4Runner then you have it made.

You'll also need a new bell housing from the engine to the tranny because the 2.7 starter is driver side and the 3.4 is passenger side. That's if you want to use your own tranny but I don't think your tranny will work because its controlled by the ecu. Drive by wire and cable is what the 03-04 have. The older stuff is drive by cable only. That's all I can remember off the top of my head. If you have anymore question feel free to hit me up. Check out my build it shows almost everything I've do for the swap. Just click SilverGhostRises. Thanks to @anthony250f for tagging me.
