Hi guys, just looking for some of your valued opinions. I have a 2011 TX TRD Tacoma and I think I want to go black and red but not positive. Any other ideas?

Another thing is I am not a fan of black and chrome together. I will eventually have the rear bumper and the grill color matched. In the meantime, I plastidipped the badges black just to see what color I want to go before permanently painting. Anyone think I should go red instead? Also, which badges/emblems would you remove/keep from the back?

One last thing, does anyone happen to have an OEM driver side taillight that isn’t faded lying around and want to sell it?

    Thanks for the replies!

I assume you mean yes to black and red? Would you paint Tacoma emblems black or red?

I say go with black emblems, I think red would be a little to bright... Well, at least for my taste, that is.

Personally I'm not a fan of using emblems as a color scheme. Chrome is, whatever, it's stock and ubiquitous. Black is, whatever, it just blends in on some colors and is a little more lowkey sometimes. If you don't want them to stand out then I'd just remove them and then there's a clean looking result. Any other color, to me, is just obnoxious and looks cheap/cheesy.

I dig the idea of removing the chrome on the bumpers and grille in favor of black. While you're at it, I'd replace the ball on your trailer hitch since it's all rusty. IMO that rust is more of an eyesore than any of the chrome on the truck.

If it were my truck I'd maybe change some things up (no raised white letters on the tires, switch out running boards for something cleaner or more aggressive looking and go back to stock headlights) but I would definitely not be trying to add a color scheme. You already have red accents on the wheels and the bedside graphic and that's plenty IMO. Maybe you could add a red 3rd brake light cover instead of clear or if you upgrade suspension it could be nice if that had red accents as well. But, I wouldn't be trying to add more red accents just for the sake of adding red.

Did the black yesterday after I saw a black Tacoma with red emblems and wasn’t crazy about it. I must say I like the black and it is still growing on me, all I know it that I do not want to remove the ones on the doors and I do not want them to be chrome. Thanks for your reply!

I do plan to get different running boards. I was thinking red or any non-base color for emblems would look cheesy. My thing is, I do not want to remove the emblems (except the one that says “Toyota” on the tailgate) and I do not want them to be chrome. What do you think of white or light gray for emblems? Still not a fan?

As for the ball/hitch on my truck, the hitch usually isn’t even on.. just haven’t taken it out since last use.

    thanks for your reply!

I feel the same about white and grey emblems as red, blue, yellow...etc. If it were my truck I'd keep 'em stock or remove them. I also don't like mods that can't be reversed so if I painted them I'd buy spares to paint and keep my originals packed up in the garage.

I think, based on what you're saying, that removing some and painting the others black is the way to go. Satin/matte would look best, and I think gloss would look cheap/cheesy. If black isn't quite right maybe you could do a DARK grey / anthracite type of color or a black chrome kinda look. Black chrome is probably a tough color to get right but you could possibly use some "smoke" tail light tint and spray it over the chrome emblems and come out with a black chrome result. Something dark like black that will blend with the color of the truck but also just a shade off to add a little something interesting.

Not a bad idea for the “smoke” tint.. might try it one day. As for now they will be just plastidipped and completely reversible until I know for sure what I want. Thanks!

Be careful with that plasti-dip. If you leave it on too long it can get dry, brittle and be VERY, VERY hard to remove. I think you may be able to loosen/soften it at that point with WD40 or something of that nature - I read something about it a while ago but forget the details. I think it has it's place - for example testing colors like you are doing - but generally, I no longer see it as a long term use type of product if it is expected to be exposed to the elements (indoors I think is a whole other story).

I plasti-dipped some wheels on my track car. One track day later the dip was baked on and became a little harder to remove, it would chip and crack rather than peel off. I've since seen other horror stories of dipped cars and wheels that baked in the sun for months/years and now have a really tough to remove coating.

Just remove it once it’s dry and be sure to do 4-5 coats and you won’t have any issues.

Those two things are not going to prevent the things I warned against. 1 coat or 10 coats, if you let it get baked on, you're gonna have problems.

Removing it once it’s dry (10-15 minutes) wont allow it to be baked on. I don’t know where you live that makes plasti-dip bake on to a crust in 10-15 minutes. Here in TX even with 110 degree summers I’ve never had an issue peeling it off 10-15 minutes after applying the final coat. Coats do matter, because the more you use the thicker it is and it is less likely to rip when peeling. It’s quite simple, remove it quickly, it won’t get baked on. Removing it years later, that’s a different story. But when he first does it, he won’t have any issues.

I think he’s talking about later down the road (like in a couple of years) if I wanted to remove the plastidip still on the emblem. Not when you’re actually applying it and peeling the edges.

have already done two of the emblems (in the pictures), did it the exact way you explained and was pretty easy to peel.
