Tacoma - OVTUNE - VFTUNER - Update Info and Original Development

I'm really hoping 2.0 is out by next Friday! I have my appointment for a tune update 4 hrs away next Friday...took the gamble! (had a trip planned in the area regardless)

 

While I'm not worried about it, I see/saw no banner stating that about the cable stock.

 

When you take it in, hand them a copy of the TSB, and tell them when you were in the mountains, at altitude, you had the issue. Then tell them you will be happy to wait while they drive up to the mountains to replicate it. Has worked for some.

When I had it done on my 2016, I read the TSB and when asked for my issues I told them every issue listed on the TSB. I followed up with it looks like this TSB number is supposed to fix every issue I have.

Show them this and tell them you had stumble at WOT. @zcweisman

 

Well now I'm curious what a "stumble" is. Because I HAVE had my truck completely stall out probably 6 or 7 times at WOT while accelerating onto the freeway.

It's exactly that.....press the gas and the sucka don't go!

 

Just print that tsb out and bring it with you. Say it happened at elevation, that way they can't reproduce it without taking it to elevation, and most likely will flash it for you.
The other option is to download techstream and do it yourself, which is relatively easy.

 

Yea, but Tactrix costs $170, Toyota charges $150 to do it. And I'd rather them do it in a controlled environment where if something goes wrong they can fix it on the spot. And before you say it, no I'm not going to buy the el cheapo kit. The engineer in me wants to remove all risk from a scenario that could leave me with a bricked ECU and a truck that won't start. It's my daily driver so I can't be SOL without a vehicle for however many days.

 

I wouldn't think they would charge you a dime to do it if there's a TSB for the issue.

 

The risk is minimal. I used techstream and updated 10+ trucks at a parking lot meet once. Just do it. It's stupid simple.

 

Have been running base 93 1.05 for about 10,000 miles and flashed back down to base 87 last night. I did this because I was spending an extra $100 a month in gas (I drive a lot and 87 to 93 is about 80 cents a gallon in my area) and it had been so long since I had the 87 base tune, I couldn’t remember how it felt.

Impressions: when I first flashed to 93 I could tell the difference over 87 base right away, but over time I felt like it was reverting back to towards 87 like performance. I also remember when I first flashed 87 base, I had a hard time discerning that between pure stock. Since I am now back to 87 base tune, I was expecting a huge change from 93 but was surprised that the difference did not feel material at all. Maybe this is all in my head?

 

TSB's are only free under warranty since its not a recall.

 

Get you some of that 2.0 beta goodness! Things have changed a lot

 

Oh Gotcha, if they charge $150 to do that I definitely second doing it yourself. I've used this cable with great success for all things Techstream related.

edit* that’s amazing that they charge you to do it and still won’t do it. I would think they would snatch that $150 as fast as they could for performing such a simple task.

 

I thought you already have OVtune and the cable, I guess not.

 

I was also assuming you have OVTune and the tactrix cable that comes with it. If you do, it's a no brainier diy choice
