Just bought a 2016 Tacoma Limited. I was changing the diff oil over the weekend and found a loose wire under the truck going to the gas tank. It is clearly not OEM because of the way it is installed. Can anyone help me with this? What is it? How should I go about removing it? I am worried it will caught on something while driving.IMG_6204.jpg

    Camper shell light maybe?

I only ask cause I have a camper and the wire looks exactly like that. Poorly routed.

I should mention that the truck has a aftermarket remote start module installed.

No camper shell, at least not when I bought it and as far as I can see no mods in the bed.

It goes to the fuel tank ??

Fuel pump circuit problems so all the safeties are by passed so the pump runs and truck gets sold.

It was a fast job with no thought of securing or running the wire correct .

Yes, it is (as far as I can tell). Wow, I got screwed! I am going back to the Toyota dealer where I got it to see what they have to say and willing to do. Wish me luck! :<

    After market trailer hitch power.

Edit: Never mind. I see it (barely) stops short of going to the rear.

Actually, you are right — I am in the dealer right now. And they told me this is aftermarket hitch wire. Does Tacoma doesn’t come with hitch wiring? The hitch is factory.

My SR did not come with a factory hitch. The dealer installed one, did such a lousy job of it that I had to re-do it ALL! Hence I knew that there was that wire fault possibility.
Could be a Tacoma hitch, added to a truck which didn't come from the factory with a hitch. That would still make it an OEM hitch but an after-market installation. That scenario would mean no factory wire harness available either.

Make them do it right or you re-do it right. Don't leave it dangling there. Nothing good ever comes from dangling!

Thanks a lot, Tartan. Yes, it is confirmed to be the hitch wire -- I was told this is a better wiring harness with the 4 pin connector, but also a round connector. It was connected all the way to the battery. In any case, I think maybe the previous owner DIYed this. The wiring is just so poorly done. I will definitely tighten it up. I was just afraid that some wire came loose, or it was something really worrisome (like bypassing the fuel safety circuity as mentioned by a poster). Now, I feel much better, even worst comes to worst, the wire is snapped, nothing bad will happen to my truck -- I don't tow much, if at all.
