I've been using Simple Green for years to degrease my vehicles and have never seen it remove paint. In fact I got Simple Green all over my hood the last time I did it and it didn't do anything to the paint other than leaving streak marks, streak marks that easily washed off using water mixed with a couple of drops of Dawn dish soap.

Other than cost and the environment no there's absolutely no reason at all to not use engine degreaser. They work slightly better than Simple Green and Purple Power work on really thick gunk. On average gunk they work equally well.

On a side note, I did try drinking simple green one day and I did looked like this for a few hours afterwards and was able to install my wheel bearings without any floor jack or hand tools in 15 mins.

Go get some trisodium phosphate powder. You’ll find it in the painting section of Lowe’s or HD. That’s pure degreaser used to clean grease off of walls before painting. I use it for everything including when I do professional window washing.

I am successfully convinced not to use oven cleaner. I had no logic to the idea except saving a few bucks, but with so many upgrades and no expense spared, I can’t try to save a couple bucks on degreased.... little embarrassed now.

BH-38 is amazing, best stuff I’ve used by far. It’s just pricey $$

I just realized I never wrote that when I use Simple Geeen I dilute it with water. My normal mix is about 1/3 Simple Green. When I'm cleaning engine compartments its about 50/50.

How particular are you about covering up plugs, openings and wires when using this stuff?

I don't cover anything. Just spray and rinse with a water mist. Really bad areas get a second application and some elbow grease before rinsing.

i don't worry about plugs. I do cover up the fuse box behind the battery and the emissions pump. Other than that be sure to use a normal flowing hose. I wouldn't ever use a pressure washer or steam under the hood.

I mean , granted you have to leave the object in for extended periods of time, but simple green, positively strips paint. DOes it strip automotive paint , not sure, maybe not. But models that are painted, it does a pretty solid job of removing the paint.

As MDFM31 said Spray Nine is a great cleaner but there are several companies making it (under a different name of course) now that their patent expired a number of years ago. The one I buy is called "Awesome" and I get it at a local Dollar Tree store where it's $1.00 per quart. The last time I bought Spray nine was over 10 years ago and it was MUCH more than that back then. A definite plus to these cleaners is you van use it full strength or dilute by as much as 10:1 with water for light duty use. This stuff is really...awesome! I use it for many different things in the shop and the house

I've used Simple Green on everything for 20+ years....wheels, engines, carpet, grease removal on painted surfaces, clean siding, windows, concrete, fencing, decking, etc., etc. Never an issue.

These wheels have seen a 50/50 mix on a regular basis for nearly 5 years. :notsure:
