I’ve been trying to decide between tires the past month or so. I’ve been trying to decide between the Grabber ATX, Duratracs, Wildpeaks, and now I just discovered the ST Maxx. My truck is my DD. Mostly in town driving, some interstate, and I’d like to get into some more offroading in the future. I probably only put around 5k miles on my truck a year. I’d like something that will wear well, be good for some offroad while still maintaining pretty good on road manners, especially in the rain. I plan on adding an OME lift over the summer and 285/75/16 tires. Just trying to get my research done now so when I have the money I can buy them.

    Thanks,
    Eli

As far as offroading goes, its the best of your choices. Daily driving its a bear, but you don't have huge miles every year.

I'd go for it in your position. I did it with duratracs and it paid off with offroading, rather than worrying about the highway noise.

The wildpeaks and grabbers won't perform as well off road as the STT's, and duratracs are hit and miss depending on the region.

I've had the ST Maxx for years in a 255/80/17 size. They have been great in any condition both on and off road. Being E rated they are heavy but have worn really well with 9/32 tread left at 57k miles. They ride quiet, comparitively, and have been great in rain, snow, mud, and rocks

Yeah, I’ve heard pretty good things about them. Noise doesn’t really matter to me a lot. I’d like something slightly more aggressive like the STs that can handle more stuff offroad compared to something that might let me down. Idk I’m just getting into this and not sure exactly what type of offroading and stuff I’ll get into. Probably more overlanding, not anything super technical, but I want a tire capable of doing harder stuff just in case.

Been running the ST Maxx for over a year, they do great offroad and wear really well. Way better than my 2 last sets of KO2s

They are heavy and e rated so don't kid yourselfinto thinking they'll ride great...you'll feel bumps and potholes more. Aired down to 12 - 15 psi on the trails and they ride like clouds with good suspension

    Did they kill your mpg?

The skinny 255s are 59lbs each at the wheel, 285s are likely more so you'll definitely feel a mpg hit.

I couldn't say how bad since I've always run E rated tires. The durability offroad is worth it to me but you do sacrifice on-road manners with a light truck and MPG

I'd cross shop the STT with MT MTZ's It's another "mild" mud terrain style tire. Just to consider.

A little rough is fine with me, my tires and suspension are crap right now so I’m used to it. Pretty excited to get this thing fixed up and get out and do some stuff.

I sell tires for a living.
The Duratrac will be the best tire for the winter climate hands down. I run these on my wife's 4runner.
The only offroading it ever sees is fire roads. These only have a 2ply side wall, biggest reason I don't put these on my Tacoma, which sees the hard core crawling.
Both the generals and wild peaks are good bang for the buck tires. I would lean towards the general, they seem to have less balancing issues and perform better in the snow.
I had the Maxx's before my km2s....I will be switching back to the coopers come spring. My reasons are simple, they perform well on every terrain I tested them on, and are still a very comfortable tire for a DD. Do a Google search for a video showing the puncture resistance these tires have, very impressive.
    I vote the Coopers.
    There is my 2 cents.

Fully armored truck and i get 15mpg sometimes better. I had them swapped over from my other Tacoma when I traded it in so have been on the truck since day one.

I'll throw in my 2 cents...

I've had 285/70/17 ST Maxx rubber on my truck for over a year. I do a mix of overlanding and hard 4x4 trails. I've been really impressed with the traction provided and the even wearing after about 35k miles. You should consider the ride quality though - saying it's a bit rough is an understatement. If you think you'll be on road more than off, I'd go with a C rated tire.

I actually managed to puncture the sidewall on my STMaxx on my very first offroad trip with them lol. Sucked but it must have been a freak occurrence because I've wheeled the heck out of then since and no issues

I like how they don't chunk up easily like my previous KO2s did...those things would get big chunks taken out from the tread on the rocks. The STMax can take a beating and still wear really well over time

Not a fan of ko2s. Wear way too fast, and like you said, they chunk bad. Over hyped IMHO.
