Eons ago I worked selling new Toyota's and once sold a fully loaded pearl white Supra to a guy from NJ. He flew up and I picked him up at the airport (5 minute drive from the dealership), did the paperwork and off he went. He said he could not buy one in NJ for anything less than stupid money over MSRP. They were not flying off the lot in Maine since they were the highest price Toyota you could buy at about $28K. This was back in about 1989. I just happened to be the lucky person who took his phone call one day. About the easiest sale that I ever had, except for that 1988 fully loaded 4Runner.....

I searched on cars.com using the filter option and the Toyota vin lookup. Most dealerships automatically load their inventory onto those sites as they’re being put into their system.

They might depending on how serious they think you are. I did sales at a dealership and had a couple of deals that were done over the phone/email before the customer stepped foot inside the dealership. The internet department makes a commission if you buy off of their lead, so they’ll usually push for answers on what’s going on from the sales person/manager.

    It's complicated.
I bought my 2019 DCLB TRD 4x4 from a dealer in Denver (Mountain States Toyota) after having done 90% of the research online, and communications via email. The salesman went and took actual photos of the truck, vin plate, odometer, etc. with his personal phone, and sent them to me. He answered EVERY question I had, and I had MANY, without issue (you'd think that it would be that way everywhere, but you'd be very surprised how that's not the norm!)
The MSRP on the truck was a bit over $43,500 and I paid $36,800 something (i forget the exact dollar, but I posted my Monroney sticker in the thread about what people were paying for their 2019 Tacomas.)

The salesman at Mountain States sent me a written quote, on their letterhead, which I shopped around locally (and was called a liar by at least 2 dealerships!)

An $87 flight into Denver, from Portland, and ~$240 in gas, for the return trip, saved me ~$6k.

    Good luck.

Another option is to get a short bed and buy a utility trailer.

Cool. I searched a ton of dealerships looking for my truck, this is the first one I came across. I agree with you. I, rather enjoy doing my own mods, but some people don’t, or can’t.

I agree with negotiating remotely and making the drive after you have an agreement. That's what i did when I bought mine.

After leaving the 3rd dealer in a row who would not honor their price I highly recommend getting an Out the Door price before driving anywhere. This is where you will find out if the dealer is planning to add on a few scam charges. One dealer added $1095 for handling because “the price is so low and every Dealer adds something “, another wanted $$250 for “ Nitrofill” in the tires (hello 1990s), and another played the rebate game. This behavior used to be a Chevy/ Ford/Nissan thing but it’s infected Toyota now. I never ask for more, just what was agreed upon. I haven’t given up as I think most Toyota dealers are decent, I just tried the place I bought my last one 12 years ago and they lied to me 4 times it turns out. Currently discussing ordering what I want ( Access Cab, 2 wd, access pkg, gray or black) with a few dealers as I don’t like dealer trades and the nearest one is like 1500 miles away. Wish me luck.

Yeah, do some due diligence and buying out of state is no biggie. Also negotiating on the phone is easy, just get them to send you an email with exact price and get some paperwork signed before flying/whatever.

Bought a Jetta from PA while I lived in AK since local dealer (only in the state) priced according to their monopoly lol. Had it shipped to WA for $800, and planned to drive it the 3k+ miles back to AK.

Turns out they accidentally swapped my car with another and sent it to CA. Instead of waiting 2 weeks I just bought a $50 air ticket and drove it up to WA over 12 hrs or so.

Luckily it got over 40mpg (diesel) so the fuel costs for the 3,400 miles of driving was less than $400.

All in all, spent about $1300 (not counting winter tires since I did this in January) to save like $6k, and have a cool story. So worth.

Also bought my Tacoma out of state.. 8 hr or so motorcycle trip down to dealer, went to harbor freight to get ramps, loaded er up, grabbed my profile Pic on the way home. But that was to only save like $200 lol. Maybe I like trips?

I had my 20 Limited on Order for 2 months from my local dealer. I ended up canceling that and picking up one while on travel for Christmas in Ohio (from Virginia).

Ended up finding the truck on Autotrader/cars.com/etc. Called the dealer and told them I was ready to make a deal if they could get the numbers were I liked them. We were able to get to an agreement and I put a deposit down and they provided me the "worksheet" that had the final pricing on it.

I ended up renting a car and driving it one way there. DROP the car off if you do this where you agreed to. My dealer said they had the HERTZ drop off box and I called the drop location, they said it wouldn't be a problem to leave it there. It ended up being a fiasco with HERTZ when the bill came in 2 weeks later that took a week of phone calls back and forth to get resolved.

    Things to consider:
-If out of state: does the state your buying have reciprocity to pay the taxes for you, if not expect to pay them when you title the truck in your state.
-VERIFY all the numbers are correct when signing all the documents. The sales rep, sales manager, and the financial guy likely don't talk exact details and my financial guy was not familiar with an out of state buyer. I caught two errors from the financial guy in the local taxes they were trying to collect that I was not responsible for.
-Do a THOROUGH walk around prior to signing paperwork
-Have a detailed conversation of the accessories you expect to have on the truck if they aren't included on the sticker. I specifically asked about bed lights, my sales guys said yes, when I got there... no bed lights. He understood it as the cab mount one. They ended up providing them for free (or will when they can order them)

I did the same thing with that same dealer. They picked me up from the airport and I drove back to Las Vegas the next day. Checking out Denver for a night was fun and I even enjoyed the long drive back being in my new truck.

The dealerships locally told me the same line, that if I could find that truck at that price to buy it. Not that they really care but now they got to service it.

When I was in the market for mine, I was set on paying invoice after reading the threads here. I came up with an email stating exactly what I was looking for, providing the codes for the add ons I wanted, and sent it to close to 40 dealerships. Only one dealer was willing to give me invoice pricing on a model they did not have in stock. They happened to find the exact vehicle I was looking for being shipped to another dealer and got it re-routed to them.

I paid a deposit and drove 250 miles to pick up the truck after about 4 weeks. The salesman was really helpful and sent me pictures of the truck when they received it.
