Thanks for the invite. New Tacoma owner here. Everyone in my family owns a Toyota and I was the newest member. 2018 4 runner and 2015 Tacoma. The issue I have is with the 2020 Tacoma. Only 1800 miles and the transmission seems like it’s slipping. 4th gear shifts so quick to 5th that it causes the motor to lug. It’s a 2.7 and went with it due to reliability. Left GM due to them refusing to replace a faulty airbag on 2011 Silverado Z71 but sure didn’t expect this from a new Toyota.....

    So what's the question?

And is there any real data to show the 4 cyl is any more reliable than the 6 cyl?

Well yes. Toyota has built and never changed the 2.7 unlike the V6. So only time will tell if the new V6 is as durable as the 4.0.

Give it a few thousand miles to learn your driving habits. It does improve . At least that is what most owners report

They have been building it for almost 20 years and for longer than the 2.7L...the 3.5 isn’t exactly new.

The 2.7 was also changed in 2015..

The 2GR-FKS 3.5l is just a comprehensive technological update to the 2GR-FE, which has been around just as long as the 2.7 and 4.0.

As a new buyer that was weighing the choice between the 2.7 and 3.5, I understand your point. I'd never buy a rig if it's the first year on a new powertrain. But 3-4 years is plenty of time to work out the kinks in this new(ish) 3.5l engine.

Turn on ECT and place the shifter in S mode and select 4 on the indicator while driving around in town. This will give a little more RPM before shifts ( ECT ) and not let the transmission shift above 4th gear in. Like the OD off buttons that are found in most OD transmission vehicles. This should help you out.

I’m not a big fan about letting someone else do a simple oil change but since it’s free I’ll take it in and try to get the dealer to do a update on the software. Truck was produced 11/19 so the 2019 TSB should apply. From what I have read that has corrected the issues.

    A few.
It wont shift past 4th gear until you hit 53/54mph in D when the ECT in turned on anyway without being in S mode.

Welcome aboard. I have the 2.7 and I picked for the exact same reason. But, I got mine with a 5 speed manual. Shifts whenever I shift, and not a moment sooner or later. Did you test drive the truck?

ETA: "Toyotacare"...My 2 years of the free have come and gone. When I was doing my own 25,000 service. During tire rotation, I found the lug nuts were cranked on so tight that I needed to stand on my breaker bar to crack each and every one. If I was out on the road, and had to rely on the jack and lug wrench behind the seat. I would have been stuck, dead in the mud.

Yes I did test drive it and wasn’t able to get opened up like it should’ve. Being it was 20 degrees I figured it would get better as the motor warmed up. It did fine on way back home. No issues. It was later in the week when the problem started to show. On the interstate it feels as if the fuel filter is got trash in it. You can feel it surging when it is in 6th gear. Other than that it’s fine. Thing is getting 26 mpg and couldn’t ask for much more.

I'm pretty sure 4th is 1:1, and 5 and 6 are OD. It's supposed to do that. Try ECT or S mode if you want to keep the engine speeds up (for example, you see a hill coming or you have a load), but without a load, 5 and 6 will still make the wheels spin and the truck will burn less fuel as you go down the road. You should get used to it.

Both are Stock - built correct from the start.
Try a forum search for "3rd gen transmission" complaints. Then read for weeks.

I'm not aware of an update for the 2.7. I could be wrong.
