    Hi all,
I'm planning on throwing a remote start kit into my vehicle in the near future. The smartphone connected options are very tempting, but I have some general concerns with security.
Specifically app security. I've reached out to some of the major players in the section with questions, and will share anything I get back here, but in the meantime am wondering if anyone has any advice or personal experience with this.

Thanks in advance. This is my first post, but the forum has been incredibly helpful for me over the years.

    UPDATE from N2:

"they are encrypted and when you use your phone to command the vehicle to do something, then that command is sent as if you were sending a text message (data) to cellular towers/beams up to a satellite and back down to your vehicle. It is not an RF signal that can be sniffed over the air."

"No vehicle with this device can be started and driven off. If the remote starter has key override, then the key is needed to take over the apps remote start and drive it off."

I put one in my truck last year. I have the push button start. One thing that they all tell you is that when the door opens, the truck shuts off. It's a Toyota thing and from what I read, there's no way around it.

I guess if they pop open your door, that's pretty secure. If they pop a window, dunno.

I have an app on mine but don’t subscribe to service so it’s basically Bluetooth range, I’ve only used it to see if it works. I use the long range fob

On my First Gen I've got a Viper alarm with Smart Start /GPS . I like this set up as I have Unlimited range to start / stop , lock and unlock . Plus with the GPS feature I've got the ability to set up perimeter fences that will notify me if it leaves the area . Also has ability to track mph of your vehicle

    Other cool features ....

Automatically notifies if vehicle battery voltage is low

Alerts if temp in vehicle is to cold or to warm

Thanks for the good info guys. I am going to add anything relevant I hear back from manufacturers to my original post.

I’ve got a 12vSolutions with the iPhone app Carlink connected by cellular. Not only does the truck shut off when you open the door it times out after 14 min and locks. Also the app is PW protected so there are a few layers of security.
