What happens when you turn off OD? Why does it seem to limit throttle opening?

Whenever I have Overdrive turned off and I accelerate full throttle, I notice if I turn OD back on while still at full throttle, the air intake noise increases and the rpms climb by 100 or so. Does this mean my OD is slipping or is the throttle body tied into the OD switch somehow? Try it for yourself sometime.
