To many variables. Just check. The catch can does not alter oil consumption. It just catches what would normally be burned.

For some comparison, i just caught 200ml over 16K miles, or two oil changes. In SoCal where temps barely dip below 50 degrees and highs in the summer rarely go over 105 degrees. No makeup oil was required but it doesn't hurt to catch it before it goes back into the intake.

And now that my 2nd gen is 8 years old I needed a smog cert.

And I found out the oil catch cans are not allowed in California.

I just had to put the gas line back to stock and he passed it.

Must be more moisture etc is made during the winter months here in VT.
Of course it has more idle time also.
I wasn’t catching much in the warmer temps.
I figured it’ll be a while before it needed to be emptied.
    I’m guessing at least 6k maybe 9k?
At least this nasty crap didn’t get back in.
No problems with freezing and we are single digits and below 0.

Damm glad I added it just wish I’d had done it sooner.
It was half full I’d say. Not sure if I’d want it any fuller it has a dip stick and that showed it full. It was still warm I did it inside but the foam crap was what made it look full.

I've had the same experience. Last winter the foam was on my oil cap, this year it's in the catch can. Seems like it's catching the moisture pretty well, I do mostly short trip and rarely get the engine hot enough for long enough to boil it off *shrug*

Is there a recommended max length for the hose to run to the Catch Can? The usual spot by the brake cylinder is already occupied so I need to find another spot to mount it.

There's only so much room under the hood so you're not going to be adding an insane amount of line to the run, unless of course you decide to mount it in the bed.

Technically, they are illegal if hooked up into the PCV system; so, when smogging it, leave the catch can in place and return the PCV lines to OEM setup. That being said, my Taco has passed the smog test twice with the catch can installed and connected to the PCV system. I use the same smog shop for our four vehicles; maybe they don't want to lose my business.

I may put it in the empty passenger-side corner. That's about two sections of 3ft of hose.

If enough oil collects in the low spots, the line could clog up if there is not sufficient vacuum to suck out the oil.

I'm usually good at looking for an answer before posting, but this is a super long thread. Also my lazy ass philosophy is to do it right the first time so I don't have to undo what I did wrong then redo it correctly.

If the drivers side is wet farting that much back into the intake, wouldn't the passengers side be doing the same? If there's a connecting tube attaching both vc's together, then I can understand attaching a catch can to only the driver's side. If not, then are we only filtering out half of the blow by oil? Please forgive my ignorance, I've had my Tacoma less than a year so this engine is new to me. Has anyone done both vc's? I haven't looked yet but maybe there's a can with 4 ports instead of 2. Or it could probably be done with a couple tee's.

I'm unable to understand why a catch can wouldn't be smog legal. I can understand if it were vented to atmosphere, but we're venting back to the intake. But then a lot of the smog legal or not makes no sense.
