Yeah I take the it out of gear and coast. It's a habit I developed in my old Ford Focus. I noticed I coasted significantly further when not in gear, internal friction of the motor/transmission must have been fairly high.

I don't have empirical evidence that this is the case with my 17 Manual Taco, but I assume it would be. The real question is whether the small bit of gas saved by the ECU would outweigh the energy lost to internal friction.

Pfft. -2C is weak. It was 17 degrees F on my way to work this morning. Other numbers are nice.

I know for certain we have DFCO. It cuts off fuel while coasting down hill in gear. You can even see it on the blue fuel mileage meter.

If its a slight hill, i would probably just coast in neutral, but if its a steep hill i always go 3rd or 4th, even sometimes 2nd. Not sure how it is where you live, but we have got some steep hills here.

When i coast down steep hills in gear, i can see my L per 100 slowly decrease.

In my ranger i would only gear down if going down really steep hills to save the brakes, otherwise i was in neutral quite a bit. Ranger did not have DFCO.

Hope that helps, good luck man.
