So I'm installing a small light bar in the truck and want to use a spare OEM Fog Switch to keep the stock look. The harness that came with light bar is wired as per the diagram labeled Option 1 to a three pin aftermarket switch, but I'm not sure how to wire it to the OEM Fog Switch. Obviously GND to Pin 4 but what about the White and Blue wires? Do I go Blue to Pin 3 and just eliminate the White?

I connected the harness and light bar to a power supply last night and the bar lights up when the aftermarket switch is pressed, but it doesn't make sense to me because of the way the relay is wired.

OR, do I de-pin the relay harness and rewire it as per the diagram labeled Option 2? In my limited understanding, Option 2 is supposed to be the correct way to wire a relay according to everything I've read on here and several other sites , correct?

If one of you electrical gurus out there can share your thoughts, I'd greatly appreciate it.Wiring.jpgWiring2.jpg

The aftermarket switch is utilizing the power from pin 87 to activate the relay via pin 85.

The 4 pin switch is a bit different. I looked at your diagram and it confused me a bit so I will explain how I wired up my lights.

I have power tapped into #4 and is activated by #3 when switch is depressed. This activates the relay. I do not have a ground connected per pin #4 as shown on the 4 wire switch.

The switches I am using are the ch4x4

The OEM switch does not have an indicator to let you know it's on. Also, it works in a funky way. To make it work, you must send +12V to 1 side of the relay coil and use the switch to make the ground connection for the other side of the relay coil. If you want the OEM appearance, a LED indicator, and a conventionally wired switch, get a CH4X4 or Onboardair switch. You can get them in custom text and icon and they're cheap.

    Aftermarket relay operation.
Pins 85 and 86 are opposing ends of a coil of copper wire that is wound around an iron core, when ground is applied to 85 or 86 and the opposing side of the coil receives +12v it creates a magnetic field inside the relay and moves post 30 from post 87a to post 87. Post 87a isn't shown on the relay in the diagram.

    Thanks all for the feedback.

@will.i.was I understand that you need +12V on one side of the relay coil and then use the switch to make the ground connection for the other side, but the way the harness was wired was confusing the crap out of me too!

@caribe makaira Thanks for simplifying the diagram!

If you took the time to understand how a relay works you would never need a diagram or color codes to wire one up. Thousands of different tasks can be performed with relays once it's understood how they work but it doesn't really matter as long as your problem was solved which in this case it was. I'm glad you got the help you needed.

Some just don't know how to mod...but you can also add light ON to the simple Tacoma Fog switch...even the Locker switch.
