Bolting into the headliner on a 2009 Double Cab?

I’m a volunteer Firefighter/EMT and I’m looking to install emergency lighting in my 2009 Tacoma Double Cab. What is the structural support like in the headliner near the front visor area and around the rear window? Would it be safe for me to bolt into these? I’m looking to install a visor light bar (in the visor area obviously) and a 4-head light bar on the interior flush with the rear glass. Have considered suction cups but want to maintain functionality of the rear sliding glass and would not like my lights to become a projectile in the event of a crash.

The headliners are fairly low density acoustical panels with enough structural strength to support themselves but probably not much more.

I’d never consider mounting emergency lighting to the headliner alone.

There are some mouting points for the roof console thst you might be able to adapt to some sort of bracket. You could conceivably mount some brackets to the roof using adhesives like

3M VHB tape and mount through the headliner to those.

 

I should’ve been more clear, the bolts would be going through the headliner into the metal above. I know on the rear there is a plastic piece, almost honey combed shaped under the headliner and appears to be a decent mounting point under there but I would hate to go through the roof on accident, so I’m trying to stick to thicker pieces of metal. I’m thinking of taking a ‘headliner bracket’ and either sliding it under the headliner and using self-tapping screws or using self-tapping screws and laying the bracket on top of the headliner and going through all 3 layers.

headliner is pretty easy to remove if you want to take a peak before mounting anything

 

So would the red dots be safe to put screws into?

 

i'm no expert, but don't see why it wouldn't work. i'd just be careful to make sure you aren't screwing into any of the wires that run in the area

 

Rivet nuts would be stronger I would think .Just make sure to check depth for correct length for bolt .

And be sure to use a drill stop. I use a piece of scrap wood when I want to make sure not to drill too deep.

 

For the rear, you can use the coat hook mounting bolts; remove the coat hooks and use the existing welded in nut to attach your inner bar.

For the front, what I did with emergency lighting (in another life, as a vollie FF-EMTI in Ohio), was to bolt a 6" or so piece of scrap aluminum to the mounting attachments of the LEDs, then wedge that up and into the headliner (between headliner and roof) from the front. Between the pressure exerted by the clamshell of the headliner / roof, and the windshield pressing down on the LED, the lights were very secure. Wiring can easily be run down the inside of the A pillar for a very unobtrusive and clean install.

Here’s my ILB mounted and wired. Been so busy with work and life I haven’t had the time to install everything else. So far my set up is a Speed Tech Lights Raptor ILB in red, 2x STL Z-4s TIR in red in the grille, 2 Whelen LIN3s in red on my rear tag and 2x Whelen Dominator 2s in red in my back glass.
