I'm glad it's all settled for you, at no cost.

We'd still love to know the technical explanation of how a filter housing created an oil light situation.

Had he done the original 'upgrade' to the metal housing and messed something up in that process? What?

Inquiring minds want to avoid repeating the issue. Lots of folks around here like the metal filter housing idea.

This is what happened originally when my friends new mechanic changed my oil months ago.
My friend owns a shop and his new mechanic did my oil change. That night my low oil pressure light came on when I hit the interstate to go to work. I took the night off and brought the truck back to my friends shop. He told me that his new mechanic removed the aluminum tube that was in the original the Plastic oil filter housing by mistake and threw it away. He installed a new aluminum tube, so he says and charged me $50. I swallowed my pride, I didn't want to argue and paid the bill; even tho we all know I should've paid anything. Now fast forward 3,000 miles later the low oil pressure light came on again. I was under the impression that the problem they caused was fixed. So I really thought something else was the problem and asked real mechanics and truck enthusiast like you all at Tacoma World since I've owned GMC, and Chevrolet's Blazers in the 70's and 80's and new to the Toyota Tacoma. This is my first foreign car/Truck that I ever owned. So my friend tells my wife, ( since I was sleeping because I had to do a night shift that day ) that the problem is the oil filter housing. That's when I contacted you guys. I was so annoyed , that I went to the shop with my wife after my midnight shift. I calmed myself down and spoke to my friend in person and told him "How can it be the oil filter housing, when YOUR mechanic removed the tube and threw it away, and you repaired the Housing?" Well you guys should've seen his face drop when I said that to him. He called me two hours later, that the truck was finished, and the new aluminum oil filter housing installed. When I went to pick it up he told me.... " don't worry about it, no charge." I left well enough alone, gave a different mechanic who worked on the truck a tip, and drove away. So thats the story why he upgraded my original oil filter housing....... Because he F**k up the plastic one in the first place...

Again Thank you all for all your help. Because of you guys I have upgraded numerous things on my truck because of the knowledge you all share to novice Tacoma owners like myself. Todays trucks are so different compared to the old chevy blazer I once had. Im a proud Tacoma DC OR SB and I love every mile I put on her. also I'm a proud member of TW. Thank you all again.

Interesting, so he threw away the perforated internal piece and that's what caused the low oil light? That makes sense, if the sensor is on the sending side and not the return side, it would think not enough pressure.

But if I'm reading this correctly the discarded internal had been replaced, and would have been in place the second time the code was thrown.
    Thus, answer goes unanswered.

Well he probably left it off on the initial oil change. That allowed the oil to flow unrestricted/ no back pressure, the sensor saw the pressure was low and thought low oil. I'm just ad libbing here though. Unless I'm reading the series of events wrong

I got it. Strange indeed. Maybe he found the tube, but not the spring loaded portion of it. It's hurting my brain haha
