Hey I'm looking into buying a tacoma for search and rescue and building it, I'm located in northern utah so we have rock crawling, mud, and snow. So you can imagine what the terrain is like so I'm looking for upgrade options outside the obvious tires lights and bumpers, let me know what yall think.

Check out our 2020 Tacoma build and see what you think. The suspension on our build was more on the affordable side. But performs really really well. We lifted enough to run a much larger tire than stock. So obstacles are a little easier if needing to crawl over rocks. Also, we were allowed to mash thru a couple feet of snow with the setup in our recent venture up in the mountains. PM or call us anytime and we would be glad to help. As conversations and posts can get rather lengthy when talking full builds.

Do you have a sponsor or is this self funded? I suggest doing reading in forums, suspension. Also do some reading in “long travel” and “recovery” threads.

The subject is too broad. You need to refine what you are doing. For example: do you plan to carry a stretcher? The final truck could include a full roll cage or it could be a stock off road with a winch, tow strap and Hi-lift.

Not a problem! We basically have the same style lifts available with the 1st Gen's too. Best thing would be to purchase a rig, see what the vehicle can handle terrain-wise in your area, and go from there. Builds can tend to be a long process. Welcome!

Welcome. I'm in SAR up in WA state, use my Tacoma for it, too. My UTV as well.

Have you been in your unit long, or new member? I see plenty of people who buy a new Tacoma or Jeep and deck it out from stem to sterm with amazing and expensive gear, suspension, tires, radios, lights, coffee maker, etc etc for SAR use. but about 90 percent of the time a stock subaru could handle our missions. I'd suggest getting a vehicle you like and leaving it stock until you find it's shortcomings.

Also, make sure to buy a 4 door. Having the passenger space is super helpful. Up here transportation for teams is our biggest role with the 4x4 vehicles.

EDIT: And if you get a chance, could you re-title your thread? "Help" in a thread title is usually reserved for members in a serious, current situation (stuck on a trail, broken vehicle, etc)

Agreed. Know the vehicles limits first and go from there.
