Amazon Gems (Affiliate links are NOT allowed)

Since Bob pointed out there's behind the scenes combat against the swarm of spammers, I move that, if in their infinite wisdom the mods wish to permit affiliate stuff, they implement an affiliate vendors list. In my admittedly forum-managing naivety, that seems like the best of both worlds:

Good guys like BoogieWoogieWoogieYeah get to benefit from their work in sifting through loads of deals and Chinese crap to find the juicy stuff that's useful to many people here.

But by limiting the scope to vetted members (what exactly qualifies as "vetted", I leave up to the mods to determine), I'd think the amount of spam would be drastically limited and having a status as a vetted affiliate vendor acts as a deterrent to joining the Dark Side. You spam too much, you lose your affiliate vendor status. Now you can't post affiliate stuff at all.

 

He and the mods pulled an April fools joke about that years ago...was pretty funny to see everyone freaking out over it “being sold” to Ford haha

 

In order for any money to be made by the affiliate, someone has to buy the product with the link they posted.

I have to say I am sad to see my ritual of religiously checking the old Amazon thread is dead, but I understand and appreciate your stance. TW will forever make my wallet hate me. This is the way.

 

I'm pretty ignorant to how all of this works as I was just a consumer who would paste in the codes that boogie would post after clicking the link. I guess my question is how do we see or know that a "code" is associated with an item if we aren't an "affiliate"? As normal shoppers we aren't privy to the codes, right? So I assume this means the only way this would work without breaking the rules is if Boogie or another affiliate posted a code but did not post a link, we search for the item ourselves, then use the code, so that he doesn't get an affiliate kickback. But of course there is no longer incentive for him to do that because he will not be compensated for all the time copying and pasting codes and item numbers day in and day out.

 

It's sort of like the Tacoma youtubers (some are members here as well). You start watching their channel because they are doing mods you are interested in. Seems like once they get a certain audience size it's mostly product placement rather than personal build choices. Most owners aren't switching high end light brands, installing every accessory from a single manufacturer, adding tons of affiliate links/partners/etc..., or selling dollar shave club razors. Great If it works for the creators, but I appreciate a less commercial approach.

As for Boogie's channel, I generally think he does a good job of balancing useful mods and product placement.

It's fine to make a buck, just provide some value.

 

Yeah, I've tried and I think it's way too much trouble and time consuming to search for specific items and share...must've been a lot easier as an affiliate. This threads gonna suck now, so I'm out. Sorry

Sad to see Boogie's thread go away but I guess it's just the way of the beast.

Same man, same. Whoever was saying “just google the item and it’ll show the discount”.... FALSE. His coupon codes were the real value of that thread.

 

For real. Affiliate or not, I was saving cash.
