On a really hot day, a penguin takes his car to a mechanic. The penguin asks, "How long will it be?" The mechanic says, "Just a few minutes."

So the penguin decides to go get an ice cream at the grocery store across the street. When the penguin gets there, he climbs inside the big freezer door and starts to eat ice cream.

Three hours go by before the penguin looks at his watch and jumps out of the freezer and races back to the mechanic.

With ice cream all over his face and his stomach, he asks, "So how's my car?" The mechanic comes walking out wiping his hands on a rag and says, "Looks like you blew a seal." The penguin says, "No, I was just eating ice cream."

I have just had a similar issue. 2017 DCLB sport 51,000 miles. Overheated yesterday on the freeway, stopped and let it rest before adding appropriate coolant.

Drove it another couple miles and white smoke out the exhaust plus engine failure.

Toyota dealership told me blown HG, unknown cause. 3-4k to fix the HG without finding the cause.

to find the cause, they’d have to tear the engine down. If found to be factory problem, it’ll be covered under warranty. If not, I’ll eat the 5k for the tear down plus the HG fix.

either way it’s a gamble. I have no engine mods and do not drive it hard, no towing or anything like that. Haven’t taken it off road since July last year, and have taken it in every 5k for service (including 50k Service back in November 19).

We’ll see what the tear down reveals, they said it’ll take a couple days to perform and diagnose

    Interesting.
Unless they can prove you negligent, I'd say that factory head gasket should fall under the factory warranty it's included in.
Let us know how it plays out. I'll be interested in their diagnosis, be it legit or bullshit.

I don't understand how they're saying this could not be warranty work....powertrain warranty doesn't cover a head gasket?

Gotcha, that makes more sense and has been a known issue in the earlier 16-17s. Glad you caught it before your 5 yr /60k was up.
