Extended range fuel tanks?

Anyone run an extra fuel tank in their first gen? Maybe where the spare tire sits? Any issues with it or regrets?

 

Scott Brady put an auxiliary tank in place of the spare on the old Expeditions West Tacoma, a 2004 DC. A donor froma Trooper, if my memory’s not wrong. Kind of complicated to manage the evaporative system and transfer pump between tanks, as I recall. Seems like a jerrycan or two would work as well.

I have a Sceptre military fuel container that I’ll use if I need greater onboard range. Otherwise I use fuel stops as a chance to move around, too.
