My .02 suggestion, when you buy tools like a shovel, don't cheap out. You don't need to buy the most expensive tool on the planet, but just ones that are going to work when you need it. Do your research and pay a little extra for build quality and durability.

I like the suggestion of tires.

In a schoolteacher's family with time but no money, we grew up car camping. Mostly in a 1967 Plymouth towing a tent trailer (or with a big canvas tent in a homemade box on the roof). My vehicles are a lot more capable now and I'll venture onto trails we couldn't have done in the Plymouth, but in the end, I still consider it car camping. No insult intended at all for those who'd rather call it overlanding.

So much depends on tires. Maps or books on travel destinations are good too.

Whatever you want to call it it doesn't matter. All that matters is you having fun.
