Looking to get rid of the chrome as much as possible. Anyone have any suggestions on if it’s better to plasti dip the existing ones that are already on there or if the overlays do better? Do they even make overlays for the first gens? Thanks for your thoughts!

    I didn’t do either...

I just got black emblems, removed the chrome ones, and the black ones in there place. Sixty bucks for a complete set on Amazon!

Yes they do. There's another thread that's recent that talks about them. First google result is an Amazon link. $130+ for the overlays.

Seems a bit steep for something that $0.45 worth of plastidip will do. Plastidip isn't all that durable, so I'd take your chrome ones off, scuff them up with a scotchbrite pad or fine sandpaper and throw a few coats of paint on them. and reinstall using double stick tape.

I tried the PlastiDip thing and it didn’t work out too well; How are you supposed put the emblems back on properly?

Imo, plastidip used in any situation looks cheap and half assed. They dont call it automotive AIDS for nothing. Find some black emblems and do it right the first time like was mentioned above.

Thanks for the thoughts everyone! I thought I saw plasti dip being applied while the emblems were still on the vehicle. I like the idea of just getting new black ones so I’ll start there. Is it hard to remove the current ones? Any tricks to that?

Not that I've done this before, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn once...

I would put some masking tape around the emblems. This will not only presever the location of them, but keep your paint from getting scratched as you are pealing them off.

For re-attaching them, not sure, but I've seen some liquid adhesive stuff that people seem to like.

    Or molding tape?

    Patience, lol...

For doing the plastidip ON the vehicle, you just mask off the area and paint of it, then you can trim around the edges of the emblem and peel off the excess.

I’m not finding first gen black emblems. I see ones for 2016 and on. Possibly some for 2nd gen too. The only first gen stuff is chrome. Might have to just paint these huh?

Yes. I’ve done the bedliner on my door sill protectors on my first gen and it doesn’t get messed up despite entering with boots

Yup. Cheaper too. Plastidip will flake off in a way over time and wear so I wouldn’t recommend it unless you only wanted temporary

Bed liner probably isn't the best to use if you plan to leave the emblems on. Plastidip you can peel off. Can't peel off bedliner.

Not OEM ones, no. They're out there (as are the overlays), but they're pretty damn expensive. Since you'd have to peel off the chrome ones anyway, might as well just paint them.

I would hope not. Bed liner is supposed to be super durable.

But we're talking about painting the chrome badges/emblems.

Yes. That’s the only application I’ve used the liner for, just an example of how it proved to be very durable.

I thought plasidip was good until I tried it and it wore out way faster than I expected

Yeah, that stuff isn't all that durable. It's just relatively easy to apply. One of the main benefits of it is that it is easy to remove, too (by definition not very durable, lol).

I plastidipped my fender flairs, and it's worked ok, but if (when) I do it again, I'll just do bedliner.

In retrospect, I should have just done bedliner in the first place. I ended up taking my flairs off and sanding them down anyway (clear coat on them was coming off). But I already had the spray cans of plastidip.
