My wife call me a "gruppy," 1/2 yuppie - 1/2 granola.. But I do not ride motor cycles, just tri-cycles with streamers. Seriously, I have a need for speed and I would kill myself and others when on a bike, so I stay away. :bikewheelie2:

Mostly stock with a few minor mods.
@JacksTurdGen now that I see exactly what you're trying to do...personally, I would just keep something like a 4 to 5 foot length of 2x4 in the back that I could use as a temporary stand to wedge between the bike frame and the opposite wall of the truck bed. Stand the bike up diagonally, wedge it with the board, jump down, close the tailgate, remove board if you feel it might cause problems. That would be my approach to your problem. Quick, cheap, and easy. No holes. No over-thinking things.

And he appears to not know how suction cups work because he asked if he could attach it to the inside of the tailgate.

I'm in the same boat, I won't let myself buy one because I'll probably kill myself.

I think there are a few good solutions. The D-ring sounds good to me. Use a small bolt and nut instead of the screws, with washers on both sides.
BUT, have you thought about unloading?
How will you open the tailgate without the cargo falling over? You might have a whole different issue there.

You can put a flat bar or small angle iron across the whole length of the tailgate, using all the screws to hold it. Then tie the rope to the bar that is supported by multiple screws. The force will not be on one screw only.

I thought he said he straps it down after the tailgate is closed. Then someone asked why he didn't strap it down then close the tailgate. I asked a couple pages back, but he didn't reply.

He uses the tailgate to hold it up. It wedges the tire in the corner. He can't seem to find a way to lift the bike over the closed tailgate, Im sure it proves to be a challenge to hold the bike up and strap it down. It really sounds like he needs a riding partner, or a bike rack hitch mount, or a small trailer, or a suction cup, or D rings, or sell the bike. All these options and OP is still not satisfied with it.
