i brought this up on the lunch table discussion a month or so back and no one seemed to know why or what is going on here . But have a look yourself I’ve got a 97 Tacoma . The hubs are pretty difficult to turn over . When they were in set in free the 4x4 definitely engages as well as in the Locked postion . Is this a quick fix ? Old mod ?

Nothing wrong like that. It's possible the ADD actuator has been modded to always be locked in.
I plan on doing mine that way but i'm going to have the ADD actuator function like normal.

    Nice truck.

I have the same set up on my 4Runner to me best of both worlds .

I know a few Tacoma`s Have the same set up .

Having to swap the CV axles and other front drive line parts is not entered into without some thought.

this is either a 4x4 swap into a pre runner, where the guy could only source parts from an ADD version (manual locking diff tubes are harder to find) but didn't want to deal with the vacuum lines and went manual with the hubs and modded the diff tube actuator to be permanently locked.

or this was a 4X4 with ADD Diff and the owner was tired of shredding CV boots because of the continuously spinning CV's and went with manual hubs so he could unlock the wheels from the hub and stop the CV's from rotating

honestly i'm not sure but i don't think ADD was offered in the 97 Tacoma..

are you 100% sure that it is actually in 4X4 when the hubs are unlocked? it may seem that way because the CV axles will turn if you hit the ADD button but its physically it impossible for manual hubs to be locked onto the CV axle by there design

id jack it up on one side (drivers or passenger with front and rear wheels off the ground) with lockers off if you have em and see if the front wheels drive when hubs are unlocked

how can the actuator operate like normal if the actuator is locked permanently?

I won't lock actuator it will function with the vacuum solenoids like stock. But I'll still have manual hubs.
    Should have worded it differant.

Gives the option when driving on highway to have the front axles unlocked and not spinning all the time. But when driving in the tiny community were my cabin is i can leave them locked in. Then just shift trans case in and out of 4x4 when needed. Locking and unlocking the front diff via ADD actuator.

ADD has been offered since 95.5.

I have manual hubs & functional ADD. This truck probably was an ADD truck and the PO swapped manual hub spindles and manual CV's. And left in the ADD actuator.

This can't be a PreRunner, because the PreRunner didn't exist until 1998.

    Beat me to it...

This is definitely a manual swapped ADD truck. I left my actuator in as well

We're my cabin is, it doesn't stay on the ground very long. Maybe a 4 to 6 weeks. Then after that any that falls melts off within a week. Then it's muddy off the paved roads in the small community.
I'm only there maybe 40 days out of the year.

If your hubs are hard to turn just pull them apart and lube everything with WD-40. There’s an o-ring on each hub dial. If it’s damaged or dry-rotted into pieces, they’re still available from any Toyota parts department.
