Definitely something that wasn't very important in the grand scheme of things... Sorry about your friend.

If he passes as well (which I have high assumptions he did) we'll never know the true motive behind running that light.

It's an absolute jungle out there. I have seen so many people blatantly run red lights in my area. The people out here in California are absolutely insane when it comes to driving.

The only thing you can do is defend and protect yourself, the art of self-preservation is one of the most important life skills that anyone can ever be taught.

Tell me about it. Driving in So Cal is no joke. I no longer live there but when I did, I also used to ride a motorcycle. I can't tell you how many times my life flashed right before me, due to other drivers not paying attention.

I owned a bike twice in my life and used to ride frequently as well. I have since gotten rid of both bikes and now just drive. The amount of times I have seen my life flash before my eyes because of other people's stupidity is unreal. The problem is no one cares these days and worse, they don't care WHILE they are on their phones in deadlock traffic. Ultimately those events and just general introspection as to whether or not the risk is worth it is what led to me ditching both bikes.

Needless to say I practice both sides of the driving spectrum regularly. I always have actually and because of it I have never gotten into a wreck. Offensive and defensive.

It also helps when you drive the speed limits like a normal person as well. :)

I ride and won’t enter an intersection w/out looking LEFT then right.
Don’t care if it’s a fresh green or if I’m coming thru at 50, ya gotta look.
Also I see red light runners once in a while but see dangerous left turns EVERY time I drive, these kill so many riders every year.
I was born in Inglewood and worked in Compton both these places are pretty lawless, if I’m going thru these areas I assume nothing and ride alert.

Just today, coming to work, a 2nd Gen in front of me was proceeding through a green light when Karen with her giant Quiverfullmobile started pulling out in front of him. He was quick on the brakes, fortunately.
We need periodic license testing, not this one-and-done bullshit.

I agree, especially when people get to be a certain age (elderly). Last year I was crossing a crosswalk on foot in our neighborhood (4 way stop), elderly man and his wife were stopped in their car and as I walked in front them he hit the accelerator and pushed me onto the hood. Luckily it was a sedan with a low bumper. He had a puzzled look like he had no idea I was right there.

Several years ago I was riding passenger with a friend of mine and we were at a stop, another elderly man plowed right into the back of us going 40+mph. Luckily we were ok although my friend needed chiropractic help for his neck for a long time afterward. When I got out of the car and asked the old man for his driver's license he handed me his Home Depot card.

You couldn't pay me to ride a motorcycle on CA streets. Traffic lights and speed limits are just a suggestion.

    The best 3 defensive driving habits that will keep you out of trouble;

    -Scan all intersections before proceeding
-Keep a 3-4 second space cushion from the vehicle in front of you
-Eyes to the rear view mirror every time you brake

The last one is no joke. I was coming to a stop at a red light, at the bottom of a hill when I noticed a logging truck behind me, unable to slow down quick enough. I decided to run the light. He managed to stop the truck more than halfway through the intersection.

I don't know if it's a SoCal thing, or simply the fact that so many people live here. Where there are a ton of people, there will be a lot of idiots/losers. Entire SoCal is like one huge city, fortunately broken up by Camp Pendleton.

I know a couple who got hit the same way, but fortunately survived after their car rolled over a few times.

I got hit the same way a few years ago, but fortunately not full on.

I owned a bike for 4 years. Had a pretty bad accident on it in 2010. It was my fault as I was expecting a van in front of me to turn once he stopped and turned on a blinker. He started to turn and then stopped....so I was back in the throttle. Plowed into him at about 25mph after a 108ft skid (police based). He fled the scene. No traffic that caused him to stop. Was just me and him on the highway. Totally messed up...thankfully my full face helmet took the brunt of the hit....and my left thigh from the bar hitting it as it was throwing me off.

Flash forward a year...I talked a buddy into a bike...I even had to test ride it for him since he didn't have motorcycle endorsement yet. 3 months later, he got clipped by someone who turned out in front of him...bike went down, so did he. Road rash, but nothing terrible. Took his equity and bought a HD CVO Electra Glide Ultra Classic. Not 1 year later, and his mom called me early in the morning letting me know he had been in an accident and was in critical condition. A suburban pulled out in front of him this time...and he hit right behind passenger rear door. Snapped both arms, banged up his head, trauma to his chest. He lived and today is perfectly fine.....even with the twin 6" titanium rods in his forearms. That accident for me was the moment I hung it up. A week later I sold my bike. It just wasn't worth it...I had 2 young kids at the time, and in the end, my wife was happy too. She always worried about me riding, but she knew I loved it so didn't say anything....and I felt terrible knowing how it made her feel.
