I’m planning on up sizing stock 265/65R17 tires to 265/70R17. This will add 1” to the height of the tire.

How many ppl would buy 5 tires and mount the fifth to the spare steel wheel? How bad would it be if you had a flat far from home and had to run with one shorter tire?

It would be ideal to have the same size tire for the spare, but in a temporary situation a smaller diameter shouldn't pose any serious issue as long as it's not driven on for an extended period of time or while 4WD is engaged. If you plan on sticking with the larger diameter for a while though, then might as well bite the bullet and go with a larger spare as well - easy piece of mind.

I would recommend that if you decide to stay with stock size for a spare even if the flat is on a rear tire put your spare on the front and replace the flat with the larger size from the front. If you were 4x4 I would replace all five (I was also replacing wheels so I replaced all five and I am 4x4). Don't know how the different circumference would effect the ABS. If you put the stock size on the rear the differential will act as though you are constantly turning. I believe the cost of on tire would be worth it.

I generally wait till the 2nd time im putting the new size on and rotate the best onto the spare wheel.

So, 265/75/16 and 265/70/17 are incredibly close in size. I'm moving from stock OR with 265/70/16 up to a 265/70/17. I only bought 4x 17 wheels. I'm debating just leaving the stock spare alone indefinitely or buying a 265/75/16 tire for the spare (to be very similar in diameter).

The cheapskate in me is already winning by not buying the 5th wheel. I'm just trying to decide does the value of a full size spare exceed the cost of a tire that only will work as a spare. It sounds like if I'm planning on getting flat tires while also wanting 4WD available the full size spare is the play.

Please correct me if I've gone down a path to stupidville

We're in exactly the same boat bud.

The stock tire OD on both the Sport and Off Road is 30.6 inches. Going to the 265/70/17 adds 1" to the OD.

The question for both of us is: should we leave the 30.6 OD tire as a spare or buy an extra tire so the spare matches what's on the truck.

I'm kinda liking the way netmagi looks at it; leave it as is for now then put one of the old larger tires on the spare the NEXT time I buy tires.

Check used tires on ebay. I found an almost new, matching spare for about $60 shipped. My thinking is that the odds are pretty good that when I blow a tire I will be in a situation that requires me be in 4x4 anyways so I wanted a match.
