Admittedly, I haven't used it a ton but it sounds like you're frustrations are mainly due to trying to use AA in a way that it isn't really meant to be used. I would imagine they designed it to force you not to use your phone (to type in addresses, for instance) because they're trying to push the hands-free "ok google" interface. I would expect once you get used to that, it should become a little less cumbersome to use.

I agree, I came from a car with no tech and was 100% used to using my phone directly for everything so using AA is largely a dumb down version of what a smart phone is fully capable of. So far AA seems a tad one dimensional to me but I also know it will improve over the coming years.
