Any recommendations for a first 1911? I’ve been on 1911 forums and the advice is all over the place. I know I need to handle a few to see how they feel but we seem to have several of you on here that know them far better than I do. I’d really like to keep it around $1300 or less, but could bump that number up if needed, especially if I dump a bunch of long guns (to get in better “gun graces” with the wife) that I’ve never even shot.

Ruger SR1911 is a great first 1911. Heck, it's just a great 1911 at any price but can be had for less than half your budget. Leaves lots left over for ammo, spare mags, holster and targets

Thanks! What about the SA TRP Operator? At first I thought Dan Wesson was my top choice but the more I read the more indecisive I get. Like I’ve said before, I’m a long gun guy and am not anywhere near as well versed on pistols. Honestly, I think I’ve got information overload at this point and just need to handle a few and make a decision.

A TRP OPERATOR may be over your budget unless you can find a used one.

Fair warning: if you buy a Dan Wesson, TRP OPERATOR or a Les Bauer as a first 1911, all others will never meet youy expectations unless you drop 4500 or more........

This was the one my barber recommended for a first gun. They do seem to be nice. I’d kind of like to just get one and be done because I have a shameful amount of long guns NIB that I’ve never even shot and the second I buy a 1911 that stank eye is coming from the wife!

If I could find one that would make me happy then I’d up the budget a bit. What I don’t want is to get one and then decide I want a better one so I don’t mind dropping some coin to get what I want. But, the best bang for the buck in me tries to stay as low as possible. :)

This is what I fear. I just got off a high end optics spree a year or two ago and don’t want to get addicted to 1911s. :)

Folks tend to underestimate the quality of the Ruger 1911s since they are so affordable. For years before Ruger started making thier own 1911s they made frames and slides for Caspian, a high quality parts supplier for custom builders. When Ruger decided to go into the 1911 business they already owned all the tooling and had all the experience to turn out high quality guns. They passed those savings on the the customer. Fit and finish on the Ruger 1911s is as good as any other makers at twice the price and in my opinion better.

The Springfield loaded series are a good option to consider. As others have said though, if you can go up a couple hundred more the SA TRP operator is a really nice gun. I think you can get them new for 1350-1450.
